So regretfully I’m working a lot more these days :) and do to dress and other limitations as in suit wear and in and out of public buildings etc my carry blades have gotten smaller and smaller

Man I miss those days of backpacking around with a Bagwell Bowie in my belt :)

Well of late I’ve gotten very interested in Michael Janichs work with Spyderco and other makers on his idea of the ultimate small defensive carry edc

He’s big on the Wharncliff and the Filipino grip

Having spent a.ot Of time training and researching blade craft I really like his ideas

In this video I spoke of the Spyderco Janich line that I am very impressed with

Now bear with me this is a custom knife post :)

Mike originally worked with Mike Snody on a design and Spyderco did a great job in bringing it to the masses in the Yojimbo and Ronin series

Well you know me and I couldn’t help but think what my buddy David Mirabile of Alaska could come up with in this genre

This is the year of the Mirabile

After winning Forged In Fire and producing some incredible pieces like the Battle Tanto , The Tsunami, etc his work is in high demand and this metal mashing monster is at the peak of his game

Luckily for me David and I are close and he took time out of his busy schedule :) to have a go for me on his interpretation with some parameters from me on the ultimate defensive/utility fixed bladed Wharncliffe

For the steel we went with one of David’s San Mai laminated blades of W2 and Stainless.

For a tank we discussed a hidden tang but I pushed for a tapered tang to stick with the design parameters of striking with the pommel. Although the tapered tang is thin at the butt I wanted steel running all the way to the end of the striking pommel

I have a pention for white grips to match my carry pieces so he was kind enough to source some beautiful white lined micarta which of course will be overlapped with his trade mark carbon fiber ITO for grip and texture

I have found a Japanese style wrap to be the most tacky handle but not abarasive to cover garments

The knife is designed to facilitate the Filipino grip

Here was the initial sketch

Here is some WIP pics

He of course forgets to shape

He of course made one for himself

Well maybe 3 :)

Starting to grind mine

Shaping handle

Getting ready to wrap

But facilitates the Philpino grip perfectly

More to come

Handle wrapping amd than David will build a low drag Kydex lined and covered in leather sheath for horizontal and IWB carry

Thank you guys

As ugly as a Wharncliffe is the utility of the blade and the devastating cutting power make it beautiful in a functional way

Add David’s visceral raw artistic flair and innate ability to make weapons means one thing

Epic Wharncliffe :)

David is moving quickly

He is further on the handle

David has big hands and if it fits him it fits me

Notice the domed pin

Notice the lamination line in the tapered tang

We wanted to run the steel not to thin to the end to facilitate a strong striker

He only has detail clean up and the lined and covered sheath to build

I’m stoked
