Do Misch metal rods corrode\degrade over say a five year period, if left uncoated\semi exposed to the elements ? I am wondering about long term storage needs for kits left in a car trunk etc, for several years. Thanks.
I have had the Goingear rods stuck all over the place in bags, cars, shop, drawers, tackle boxes etc,for years and not noticed any rusting. I guess you could coat them in clear nail polish if concerned.--KV
I've had a few that just kind of disintegrated over the years, not rust though. It wipes off and they are still useable just makes a mess. Thats only on rods I've used though not on new ones that haven't been scraped.
I have a Strikeforce that is at least 10 years old and it gets used. 1/2 or more scraped off from starting fires. Never a hint of degradation from storage but some times I notice a fine coating of something. However it isn't a problem. I have heard of people getting something, maybe salt on them and they basically disintegrate in under a month or so if memory is correct. There was something on Youtube about it. I don't worry about this but that's just me. I also believe the few people who had problems as their stories are all similar.
My observations; I just dug out a blast match out of a parka pocket. It had been in there for a couple of years. It had corroded to the point that the spring action was blocked. And there was highly inflammable powder all over the inside pocket of my parka. A little lube and it was cleaned up. When done ,there were three or four large pits on the ferro. I sealed with nail polish. I used to have recycled Bic lighter flints set into My SAK and noticed after time they would turn to dust. I then sealed those and didn't use them for practice. I had one other Swedish firesteel get the big pits on it. Other ones I have squirreled away seem to survive OK. Just the ones that get near me and my sweat seem to suffer.
