Missing Birthday Gift Found Amongst the Christmas Cheese

I couldn't make it to my sisters this Christmas but my dad recently paid her a visit and she gave him a box containing some belated gifts. She rang me recently and asked me if I'd picked the presents up from my dads, I told her I hadn't but would soon do so. I did and called to thank her, "so you liked your penknife did you" she enquired, "penknife?" I replied. "Yeah Paul (her partner) gave you his father's penknife for your birthday, didn't you get it?, it was in the pink box with the others". Well I didn't see no pink box when I went to my dad's, just the presents on the table. I rang my mum immediately, fearing the box had been thrown away. She told me she'd re-used the box to store the cheese left over from Christmas. Fearing the worse I asked her to check the box. The next morning I called in and asked my mum if she'd found anything, "Yes" she replied "...a small package". Pheeew! it was there, and I'm so glad it was. Not only did I find an interesting little knife with a great modern look in stainless steel and an interesting configuration of wharncliffe and coping blades, but also, I think, an incredibly thoughtful gesture on the part of my sister's partner to give me something that had belonged to his departed father because he knew I'd appreciate it. This one will be treasured alongside my grandfathers and great uncle's in the family knives section of my collection. I'm going to visit my sister for her fiftieth birthday party in a fortnights time but before that I think I owe someone a phone call and a big thank you. :)

Lucky that interesting looking knife didn't get tossed in the trash. Very thoughtful gift, better than a box of cheese! Any details about the age, material? Appears to be fairly new stainless?

That's a lovely story, and a very thoughtful gesture :) I hope your sister has a very happy birthday Mark

I'm thinking 60's or 70's, and yeah definitely all stainless. Interestingly no makers stamp like Jacks example I think. It is well made.

Does your knife have similar blade stamps to the one I have Mark? I bought that as part of the collection of someone who only collected Joseph Rodgers knives. It could very well be Rodgers, but LATER Rodgers I think. Otherwise, I'd say Harrison Fisher

I think I might have also gifted someone a knife which was the same as mine except for the Davey-Lowey marks. Not sure I have a pic.

Yes it does Jack. They just read Stainless, Sheffield, England. No makers stamp. Nice to think it might be Rodgers, the quality is certainly good. Would David-Lowey have been the recipient of your knife Jack?

You certainly did Jack. A fine knife too. :D
Nice story Mark. I'm glad you got that sorted out.

Davy-Loewy were one of the big Sheffield steel and engineering firms Mark. I can't imagine there were too many in the Foreman's Association though :)

Thanks for helping out an old feller with a bad memory Bob! :D

:D I realize the problem all too well my friend. ;)
I sometimes carry this one when I have to dress for an occasion. It gets lost in your pockets and you'd never know it was there.

... and with a (fortunately) great story, besides. :D

I appreciate others' identifying information, but for me this will always be your Cheese Knife.
