This story came out last week, and I find it interesting on a couple of levels, most of all because he's from my neck of the woods. http://www.modbee.com/local/story/13111810p-13760653c.html. Though not as high profile as the recent Kim Family incident and now the Mt. Hood story, there are still lessons to be learned.

On a side note, he disappeared (if he ever made it that far) from the area just a few miles west from where Bear Grylis filmed his recent California episode. Now, I'm not blaming Bear, just putting the terrain in perspective! :)

Interesting article. It's stories like these that should prompt even the experienced outdoorsman to prepare for the worst with extra gear/supplies.

If the man just wanted to disappear off the face of the earth, that's one thing. But I feel for his mom, who has to live with the uncertainty of his decision (if this is the case) every day, not knowing where her boy is. If you're man enough to make a decision like running away to live like a native, then you should be a big enough boy to tell your mom what you're doing. Show her at least that much courtesy!

Always prepare and plan for the worst. Amen.

Speaking from experience it only takes one time to go with clothing too light for the season, or to think you have enough water for two days and drink it all by nightfall on Day 1.

In late September we spent the week camped at Herring Creek, which is only about 10 miles from where he was headed. Trust me, even that early in the year you need a hell of a lot more gear then what is being reported he had with him. We deer hunt there every year and always pack extra sleeping bags and heavy tarps to throw over us in our tent to stay warm.

This reminds me of the story by my house in Wrightwood where an LA type fella brought some cousins from Mexico to go deer hunting and khe lost one of them after a night of drinking. THis was about three months back I believe and he said he wouldn't leave till he found his friend. THey never did as far as I know. About two years ago not 20 miles away they lost a retarded kid then they found his remains about six months later. There is a real mountain lion problem in SoCal but people would rather save the kitty than allow for law abiders to hunt them. IMHO>

He may have ran into a psycho killer in the woods. That could explain the truck sightings. I hope not.

That why they are checking his bank accounts and more.

He is a very large man and even though he is an outdoorsmen it would be very easy for him to mistep and do some serious damage to himself. Especailly if he was fasting like the news article says. That can easily cause light headedness and other problems with electrolytes. I don't know if he had any medical issues that fasting could have made worse. I hope thats not what happened but hes a big boy and if he went down, he might not have been able to get back up.
