So, I have:

(1) Sebenza (large and small insingo)
(2) Mnandi
(3) Ti-Lock
(4) Benchmade 710
(5) Rockstead Hizen
(6) SNG
(7) Umnumzaan
(8) Emerson (the lock-up came so weak I can close the knife with my hand while it is locked up -- I may just toss it in the trash - not particularly fond of this knife)

Is there any reason I need to try out a Spyderco or Bradley (or any other)? I feel like every purpose I use a knife for is pretty much covered but figured it was worth asking since people seem to really love the Spydercos.

I would say you need to try the ZT 0560 and the Kershaw Tilt. see what you think, when they are out.

I am not familiar with the Hizen. But a Spyderco Military can do some things better than any of the other knives on your list. That said, there is no rational reason for you to get another folder.
But who's rational about knives here on BF? :D

Please send the Emerson to me! I can provide my addy.

If you already have a large and small Sebenza and an Umnumzaan, I see no need to pick up a Bradley Alias.

I agree with philwar, a Spyderco Military might be a good addition. Although the blade is only a little longer than the Umnumzaan's, the extra length, combined with the negative blade angle, makes the Military a good choice when cutting on a flat surface. I'd like to say that I use my Military as a beater knife, but that plan has kind of failed since I'm carry my large Sebenza about 90% of the time--it does get a lot of use as a portable kitchen knife though.

looks like a great list, may want to check out the spyderco sage 1/2 or the manix 2, if you are into bigger handles and longer blades try the military series. I currently EDC my Sage 2, it replaced a small sebenza(my edc for 2 years) and I have no regrets.

I guess it all depends what you normally EDC. I tend to buy knives that I can fit into my rotation, or knives which fit a specific task. Spyderco knives definitely have some unique features, the spyderco round hole, and great fit/finish with a quality blade steel. The Spyderco Gayle Bradley tribute knife is worth looking into, carbon fiber scales and cpm-m4 blade, pretty sweet deal.

The spydies tend to see the most pocket time. Hope this helps!

(8) Emerson (the lock-up came so weak I can close the knife with my hand while it is locked up -- I may just toss it in the trash - not particularly fond of this knife).

You're in luck, I happen to recycle used/broken knives. :D

Send it in.
Whatever people say about Emerson, they WILL fix your knife for you.:)
Then you can either decide you like it, or sell it for enough cash to buy one you do like.
Hell, if you would throw it in the trash, send it to me.

Is there any reason I need to try out...

Honestly, anything you put in this sentence to finish it is pointless. You could have said "I have a Buck 110" or "I have a Victorinox Soldier" and you wouldn't need to try anything else out. Folders have their place, as do fixed blades. I have a lot of folders, some do a particular thing better than others, but they all cut things. I LOVE buying new folders, not so much fixed blades because I can't reasonably carry them for EDC. I will continue to buy more folders, and I will sell them too; it's a hobby, and when you analyze it, a reasonable one because you rarely lose any money buying and selling used knives, it's only when you start 'collecting' that it gets expensive.
So...do you NEED to try a Spyderco? Hell yes! They are awesome knives that typically come with awesome steel and are put together extremely well.
Do you NEED to try a Bradley? Hell yes! They are awesome knives, awesome steel, so smooth you'd think it was a Sebenza (and I've got one listed for sale).

Just keep your purchases balanced by your sales and you will be able to participate in a useful hobby that gives employment to many and enjoyment to millions.
Cheers,
R

Great responses - thanks so much. And, I finally got over my annoyance at receiving such a shoddy knife that I sent it in to Emerson to get fixed. It just angers me that they send me a piece of crap and I have to send them $14 to fix the problem. Regardless of what I think of the knife, I would never buy a new Emerson again. I trust you all enough that maybe I would consider a used since then you have someone checking the quality since god knows Emerson doesn't.

As for buying a Spyderco, I have it narrowed down to:

Zulu Jens Anso
Spyderco Perrin PPT
Spyderco Gayle Bradley
Delica 4
Caly 3

Any thoughts?

Definitely try Spyderco. They're worth having in any collection. As for the Emerson, I'll take it, and I'll even pay shipping :) But more seriously, why not just send it in. Every knife company has the occasional lemon. You might as well just get it fixed instead of saying that it's trash.

Other knives I'd try out:

Spyderco Military, Para 2, Manix 2
Benchmade Ritter Griptilian (with custom scales)
Hogue EX-01
ZT 0350
Ka-Bar Phat Bob (this one's inexpensive, but surprisingly great)
HK 14650 is my favorite small knife. They have some other great models.
Darrel Ralph (anything by him--I have the Gun Hammer)

I would say, first of all, you oughta send the Emerson back for repair or exchange. Judging a company's entire range of products based on one example of lax quality control is a little bit silly.
Otherwise, try a Manix 2 from Spyderco. I think it's a really great all-around design, with a very sturdy and reliable lock. Spyderco's manufacturing quality is top-notch.
Every company produces the occasional lemon, no exceptions.

You're missing a few good ones. Camillus 5.5" or 7" CUDA MAXX- Benchmade 940 or 943 Osborne Ti- William Henry B-15 Titan- Kershaw 1840 S110V Shallot- and a David Boye dendritic Cobalt carbide crystal folder. The CPM S90V Military also rocks.

I think you should post one really good picture of all those great knives side by side in that same order you listed. :)

I'd say that you are pretty much set...wait, what no hinderer?!

On the initial inquiry...usually, no other reason than curiosity should be needed, especially if you've got the coins to spare.

You seem to like higher end knives so I would skip the purchase of more productions and start looking into custom knives.

If you really want a Spyderco then there are two that I always recommend. The Gayle Bradley and the Paramilitary 2.

Customs . . . I thought about those but do not know much about them. I have a Kirby and a Todd Davidson and that is about it. Who els should I look into? I am not much one for ornate.

andrew demko ad-10 because it is probably the strongest folder ever made including the lock
