Highland Scenic Highway — Multiple police and rescue units are searching in the Cranberry Wilderness for a missing Virginia man.

Michael Camilletti, age 56, of Stanardsville, Virginia, is believed to have entered the Cranberry Wilderness on May 23.

On June 27, State Police Trooper Mark Agee did a license plate check on a vehicle parked off of Williams River Road and discovered that it belonged to Camilletti, who had been reported missing. Camilletti's brother reported him missing on June 12.

The missing man is a retired Army colonel and an avid outdoorsman and caver. Police were told that it is not unusual for Camilletti to depart without notice on extended hiking trips.

The retired colonel is reportedly divorced with two children.

On June 27, when the State Police discovered that Camilletti had been reported missing, they searched his vehicle and discovered a note, apparently written by the missing man. The note stated that Camilletti was starting a hike on May 23 on the North-South Trail and planned to be out of the woods four days later on May 27.

The next morning, June 28, search teams from the State Police and Pocahontas County Search and Rescue started searching along North-South Trail.

Pocahontas County director of emergency services Melvin Martin coordinated with the West Virgina Department of Homeland Security Search and Rescue for a cadaver dog team, which arrived on Wednesday to help with the search.

On Tuesday, 10 two-person search teams scoured the area. On Wednesday, six teams and the cadaver dog team continued the search.

The Cranberry Wilderness is a 47,815 acre preserve in the rugged Yew Mountains, with elevations ranging from 2,400 feet to 4,456 feet.

Weird. Wonder if he had a heart attack or injury?
 
No telling, but the fact they started looking a month late should reinforce for everyone that you should be in the habit of leaving your plans with someone who will notice that you don't return on time, whether it be neighbors, family, or even work, especially if you're not somewhere that has rangers or requires a permit.

It's sad how many times we hear this sort of thing. Sure, he left a note in his car... but his car wasn't found for a month. That just isn't enough.

Here's hoping we have a new survivor to talk about in a few days, and not another death.

Guy supposedly left 5/23 and nobody figured out till 6/12??

Can't help but wonder if something else is going on.
 
Suicide note are usually pretty specific>the info he left behind is "too like him.".But he's been gone for too long and with teams looking for him-we can always hope.
