Get yourself at least a gold membership here so you can get answers from various members who are very knowledgeable.

As per the rules you're not allowed to ask about valuations without at least a gold membership, it keeps people from ising this site merely for the purpose of making money then never coming back to contribute to discussions...ect.

You won't regret it... And well.. welcome !

a friend from a knife store told me to use your site, i am not selling knifes, nor do i want to, i probably will never use this site again except for looking for the information in question, just looking for some help, so thanks for your help in telling me to sign up , i can see this was not helpful

Your friend told you to come here because this is the largest knowledge base for cutlery identification and valuation on the internet. If you think you can find someone to accurately appraise your collection for less than the $30 gold membership fee here, good luck...but I feel you will be disappointed.

The rule is no asking for values without correct membership. I’m not sure why being told that was not helpful? Why doesn’t your knife store friend just give you an estimated value? I’ll assume you want a low number so you don’t have to give up something else to retain the knives in your divorce, so ask your buddy to give a low value, I would assume the court/lawyers could work with a knife store employees estimate, no?

Please stick around. Even if you don't get a membership, the search feature is very robust and you will have good results by entering the specific knives here and finding out about them. Another solution would be to use the various auction sites and Craigslist in your area to find comparables. Finally, value and worth are different: Market value (i.e., "What it's worth") will differ from what value you may place on an item. If any of these items has sentimental value, no one here can address that.

If you have any idea of the market value of at least one of the knives, ideally one of the higher end items, you may find that the cost of a membership is compensated by being able to sell it at a profit to you. If you are trying to value the collection for accounting reasons, then just the peace of mind of being able to keep your collection as your assets are divided during the divorce may also be worth the price of membership.

Whatever you choose, you will find folks here have an immense amount of knowledge and that Spark, the owner of the site, has gone to great lengths to keep the archive of this knowledge available to posterity.

If any of these knives is old, antique, or unusual, you really do owe it to yourself to find out as much as you can about it.

Welcome, jeff d sevy. If all you want to know is the value of your knives without being willing to pay for a membership, then the members here can't help you. If you'd like to learn more about the knives in your collection other than that, though, just for the sake of having the information, or to have more knowledlearning more about the knives that your father collected, there's a wealth of knowledge here if you ask the right questions. Best wishes to you either way.

Given your brief description, many here (including me) would love to see a pic of the collection. Your father sounds like a good collector.

Additionally, you titled this thread "Missing Knives." Does that indicate you don't actually have them? What's the story there?

It was actually very helpful , this is the best place to get your answers and $30 is well worth it.
There's nothing else I could tell you anyways as we need pictures to know what they are.

This is a great place, so please stick around, if you just want general information about these knives you can certainly get that here ( minus the values ).

Jeff, the community wants to help you, so why not help the community with the minimum membership to help keep the doors open? Ain't like freebies from mega-sites like Google who will track and spy on you and sell your soul to the devil "for free".

Personal opinion.... unless they are "special knives", it will be difficult to establish a value other than based on something similar selling today. But you can't sell them for that generally speaking as an individual. Appraisal services aren't cheap.

LOL

Your question was does anyone know how to go about getting a value? The answer is get a gold membership and other gold memebers will discuss value worh you all day. You can even sell them here too. You asked and we answered.
Outside of this this forum, check local pawn shops and antique dealers. Ebay etc.

If you need a value for insurance purposes, you'll need a proper appraisal that has credentials and whatnot. Not a bunch of random whackadoos on the internet.

He's going through a divorce. I know from experience that can be nasty and devastating. The value of this site and the fairness of it's rules are unarguable. However, it is probably the last thing he wants to think of at the moment. He is probably moving into a cheap apartment and trying to make a new start hanging on to all the memories he can.

The best advice I saw was having the knife store employee value them. Although they might be valuable, they are more likely not worth a whole lot. If her lawyer will not accept the knife store employees value, maybe you can tell your lawyer that they are not worth a lot and ask if he can require her to have them fairly appraised.
