I posted an article on sharpening yesterday and then it disappeared.

Did anyone happen to see it and make a copy for their personal use? Uncle Bill even replied to it.

And I just posted on the YCS and "her" tools and it didn't come up so this is also a kind of test.
And it may have been my problem as I did something different.
I will try again.

My name and password comes up okay, but I don't know what the problem may be.

I have seen posts in ther forums that has talked about missing posts, but never thought much about it.?!?!?

Hmmmm.
I just posted "The YCS and "her" tool's again and it didn't come up and I did it the same way I did this one.
If I post it again and it happens to double post could you delete one of them Bro?
I don't want to fill up the board with all my posts like that may do.

Yvsa,

I wish I had printed the article on sharpening- intended to today. I am very glad to have access to your knowlege for reference.

Thanks

Uncle,

In the interest of maintaining my position as a top flight federal criminal investigator (at least until 9/4/03 when I'll be eligible to bid adios to Uncle Sam) I'm not at liberty to disclose my investigative techniques.

Oh, alright, twist my arm, but don't tell anyone. Just go to "search", put Yvsa's name in the block requesting the "poster's" name and set how far back you want the software to search. Voila!

Guess I'll have to find a new job now!

Yvsa, when you use a steel to work out dings and other deformations on a blade, do you wipe the edge with it, or do you pull the steel away from the edge? I assume that the knife is clamped in a vise while you do this.
My knowledge on edge restoration (besides resharpening) is very limited.

Ha! Notice there's an empty post from "unregistered" at the bottom of the thread. I've never seen that before ... I've never seen a thread that didn't show up in the thread list, either.

Bill, try deleting that post and see if that fixes the problem.

I'm going to try posting just to see if that fixes it ... maybe that weird post won't have the same effect if it isn't at the bottom -- I doubt that'll work, but it'll only take a minute.

Many Thanks Blues!!!!!
I will copy it and repost. And thanks to all that saw it and thought it worthwhile.

On second thought, Bill, DON'T delete that weird post yet -- Spark may need to see it to figure out what caused the problem. I'm going to run over to the Service and Support forum and post a detailed description of the bug -- in the meantime everybody will read this thread and can get to it through the link Blues posted, so the thread is accessible.

Cougar I reposted it and copied it into my e-mail so it won't be lost again.
And I Saw that unregistered as well, and wondered about it.
This may be the key to the other posts that have came up missing in other forums.
I hope it helps Spark to figure it out!!

Bob I do it different ways depending on the direction of the impact and its depth.
I ALWAYS push away from the edge to prevent injury and haven't needed a vise so far. Sometimes if one is badly impacted it's best to work from each side of the area towards the center of it in order to push the material back where it belongs.
And.... most times the impact isn't that bad and can be worked out with the flat side of the karda by just pushing the edge back where it belongs. With a bit of practice it becomes easier and easier to know just what to do.

The AK Bowie had an impaction about 1/32" deep and was fairly even on both sides due to the even pressure of the vise when cutting the carriage bolt in two.
I do lay the blade on something sturdy where I can get to the edge to work and in the case of the AKB used equal pressure on both sides to bring the edge back. It was actually sharper after the work with the karda than it was before.
Richard was there when the bolt was cut and was impressed with the small amount of damage to the edge and when restored with only the karda (and I think I used the back of my Marble's as well) was even more impressed with the AKB's scary sharp edge as he put it.

It took quite a bit of pressure at the beginning to get the edges at the end of the dent to move.
You won't hurt the knife by using a great deal of pressure, after all damage is what you're trying to fix and it took a great deal of pressure to move it to begin with.

I think that not using enough pressure may be the problem most are having removing impactions.

I encourage trying to work these areas out rather than fileing or stoneing them out. It saves a lot of steel and preserves the hard part of the edge a lot longer.
And even if you aren't able to get it all out the first few times you are getting practice and at least preserveing some steel.

Thanks Yvsa. With your help, I may become a competent edge reworker yet.
