Do you think it's possible to make a 3" from a 42....?

A chop job? Well, If you shortened the handles an inch, you'd sacrifice the latch gate. You'd probably have to settle for latchless, in fact, since you end up right in the middle of the skeleton hole pattern and there's no place to put the latch. To make matters worse, you'd end up latchless but with channels all the way through the handle. On a proper latchless, the channels end abruptly and the punyo is closed.

Of course, when you cut into the handles, you'll run the risk of running into casting voids.

The blade could be ground to a new, shorter profile, sure.

You'd need a hack saw or Dremel tool to cut the handles off and a bench grinder to reprofile the blade. A lot of work to polish and clean everything up and make it all look nice again.

I'd be an interesting little balisong. I've you've got an extra 42 to play with, why not give it a try?
