Mission knife MPT blank? What is it?

Howdy,

So - I just picked up a Mission MPT titanium knife in a gear trade. Upon recieving it I realized that there was no edge on it - it just hasn't been sharpened yet. Also - from looking at the photos of it in 1SKS it differes a bit. The knife I have is uncoated titanium, but the 1SKS pic looks like it has a coating. Also missing are the blade serrations and markings on the blade - mine is totally sterile.

So - this all has me scratching my head a bit. Any ideas? Do I have super rare extra valuable factory escapee or just a lump of titanium that will take me forever to sharpen?

Any and all ideas appreciated :D

and now the pics....

Thanks!

Have fun!

I don't know anything about its history, Mission has a forum on www.knifeforums.com, so you might want to pop in there and ask about your knife.

To apply an edge, I found that using a bastard file works the blade more efficiently than a stone, and is even better than a belt sander. Refine the edge with a stone after it is shaped.

Send it back. It's not rare, it's just not finished.
BTW, I don't think it was coated, it just photographs that way.
(maybe it's bead blasted)

Thanks guys!

I fired off an e-mail to mission knives, that ought to get the ball rolling on getting the knife finished.

I swear I saw the words "Frost Cutlery" on your knife Dan... :)

I hope you are safe pal!

It seems obvious, but did you ask the person about it?
You said you received it in trade.
Okay, did the person you got it from buy it new, if so who from, and did either party polish or do anything to it?
BTW, you might just want to keep it that way.
Personally, I really dislike bead blast.

Ha ha - I'm safe and sound at home right now. Thanks for asking though - hope you are livin large!

As for asking the guy I received the knife from - language has been a barrier (he speaks Japanese, I don't) but after a couple of e-mails this is the story I have....

"Rick is my friend,
Richard Schultz is the founder of Mission Knives.

This MPT was received to rick few years..
It's a very early MPT knife(Not sell )
This mpt was Rick's personal collection.
He liked this blade color"

So now I guess I just need to contact Mission knives about getting the blade sharpened.

Have fun!

Dan

You might just want to keep it for resale value..........
Although you definately should contact them to confirm the autheticity of the seller's claim.

Well - if all gets verified - it is up for sale and or trade. I just want a knife I can use. Idealy a sharpened MPT - man, that knife just feels alive in my hand :D

OK - the latest, posted by John R.Moore on knifeforums......

"When I first saw this MPT on my e-mail yesterday I thought it was a blade that had been taken during an outside vendors processing and the one who had it was trying to make a few dollars. This morning I learned from a phone call from Japan it was part of Rick Schultz's collection and a real collectors item. It was most problity held by Rick as a reference sample and he kept it when he sold Mission. Yesterday I sent an e-mail saying we would sand blast and sharpen it for use. The ident and serrations we could not do with ease.

Now all has changed! This is an orginal MPT in the old sheath and with an unmodfied blade and handle. There will not be any more of these MPT's. Mission has changed sheath blade and handle plus we have cut 100 MPTs in 3/16" A2 tool steel. Intresting choice; do you leave it as is or modify it?? I am glad it is not my decision to make. Collectors item or working blade.

But like I said, I am looking for a user, but sure don't want to mess up a collector's item. Possibly Ebay in this knife's future ;) I just don't know. If I can figure out a kind of value - I'm up for trading right away.

Dan

That is a pretty cool find Dan! And I am glad that it turns out it isn't a Frost Cutlery knife. WHEW!!!

Hey, speaking of which, I have a Frost bowie made of surgical stainless steel, with a painted brown blade and desert camo sheath. Wanna trade? :)

I hope you get a pile of cash for your Mission knife Dan!

Karl you Bastid! ;)

I'm tempted - cause you know how nice a big frost would look on my vest :D

Seriously - strange as it sounds, I'm not looking for a pile of cash - I'd like to trade it for another MPT and I guess an add on knife - or if the value is there - a MD Tigress. Who knows? I just need me a big ole user knife I rekon ;)

Dan

Dan,

a big pile of cash is what that knife is worth to a collector. Besides, you could have an even trade for a user Mission, or you could get a big piel of cash, buy a user Mission, buy a coffee, buy a knife rag, buy some new socks for your boots (take care of them feet soldier!) and take your wife to dinner and maybe buy her a present too! Much better value. Of course, you could trade straight across for my Frost, and I'll send you some coupons for coffee at Starbucks...

Frost bowie on tac vest... reminds me of a story that I cringe at now. So I am like 18 or 19, hiking with my old Tae Kwon Do instructor who, earlier in his life, was a Brit Para and was a memebr of this very social club called the SAS :) He's got his trusty kabar on his belt, and I have my Frost bowie (best knife I had, if you can believe it!). We pull out our knives and trade 'em across to have a look-see. He said "hmm" in a positive way and handed it back to me. Instinctively I knew that my knife wasn't as good as his. As I developed more as a knife nut and learned about things like how super cool surgical stainless steel ISN'T, and how Frost knife designs are more for the wall than the woods, I developed a deeper and increasingly aching embarassing feeling about that incident.

Off I go to drown my sorrows in Pepto Bismol...
