Mission MPF-1/ they look like some nice folders, also expensive. But I see very little real info anywhere . does anybody have an opinion on titanium blades or A2. thanks Rich/
Hello, looks like a great forum

Welcome to BladeForums. :)

Titanium to me isn't a great blade steel. On the plus side it's nonmagnetic and rust proof. On the downside it's very soft compared to other blade steels and doesn't hold an edge very well.

The titanium alloy used by Mission Knives is better at edge-holding than others.
I have a couple of their utility knives that work on food, the MBK and MPU.

tit.doe,st corrode easily or have a magnetic signiture, other than certain military ops.you are probably find most ferrous alloys will perform most uses far better.

Thanks for the replies. That is what I was asking myself, why would you need a ti blade? Obviously for moisture, but not for an all around knife. How about A2 steel? Rich

If you insist on getting a Mission MPF. get the A2 blade.
The Titanium blade does not hold an edge, as compared
to 440C or AUS-6A.

Mine resides in a display, as it is not worth carrying.

I have a Ti blade MPF. It is my dedicated swimming knife. Other than that, it sits in my knife bag.

I had a MPF in A2 about a year ago. It is on of my favorite knives I've had in that price range. Excellent grip, lock and all around design. I especially liked ther blade shape. The only down sides that I found with mine was that it was combo edge, and I didn't care for the pocket clip. It was long and pretty flexable. I suppose that's so it can be fit on a duty belt or other thicker gear. Not ideal for pocket carry in my opinion, but it still worked. My advice is to get one, but go for the PE in A2, and then consider having a replacment clip make for it. Having a 100% Ti knife would be cool, but the coated A2 is quite rust resistant, and a great steel. I really liked that knife and hope to have another at some point. BY the way, I'm pretty sure the have a slightly smaller verson out now too.

If you want a light weight, rust free SD blade, go with the Ti. I'm not crazy about the MPF's handle design.

I'd go with a Spyderco H1 piece if I was looking for light and rust free, personally, but I've heard nothing but good things about the quality of Mission. If you really absolutely want a Ti blade, they're the way to go.

I bought the Ti bladed model. It sits NIB. If I had to do it over again I'd have gotten the A2 model, which wasn't yet available when I bought mine. I guess that makes it pretty old, but Ti shows no age.

It's a very well built hoss of a knife. If I ever get the chance to trade for an A2 model I'd jump on it so I can use it. It would jump to the top of my EDC list.

Absolutely, when I lived in CA and hit the beach, it was the one that went with me. Really great for all day in salt water, as I hear Spyderco H1 is also.

I've had three MPF models. Two Mission MPF 1 Ti plain edge and one Mission MPF 3 ti plain edge. My two MPF 1 sat because of their large size, my MPF 3 was my edc from Jan of 2006 through this summer. Sold em all to finance a gun purchase. The handle design apart from the clip being based on the pivot pin or screw is probably the best handle design around and I feel comfortable saying that as others have commented on the design of the handle. Rolf or lycosa is the first person I've seen that says thumbs down on the handle.

My mpf 3 was used just like a steel knife, I cleaned my squirrels, my ducks, geese and deer without and did everything else I typically did with a steel knife. Didn't have to sharpen any more than I would have a steel knife. Maybe I got a great one, I don't know but the thing held an edge and I used it. The one drawback for me was the price point and quality control issues as I paid over 400 apiece for these things, didn't like the MPF 1 due to size their just too large for practical applications like skinning a deer or cleaning ducks and geese. Moreover I had to send the mpf 3 off to steve rice due to vertical blade play that required him to peen the lock bar to get the lock up solid again.

I pay 400 for a tool it had better not need fixing or replacing after 3 years in the field. My mpf 3 in fact now belongs to STR as I sold it to him shortly I recv it back from his fixing the lock situation and making some modifications for me with the clip as it was a poor design that put the lock pin/screw under pressure. STR has written about this poor design feature in his forum where he and I went back and forth over my mods request while he was working on the knife. He also posted some reviews and opinions of his thoughts about the mission ti as a blade material. To let you in on a little bit of what he thought, he was actually impressed after he actually got to use one at how well it held an edge considered the blade was ti and that the mission ti out performed his talonite and I believe his stellite blades. Its been a while since I read his reviews.

The ti is not steel but the one I had the blade held up great it was the handle (which I love by teh way) that went to crap.

On another note Mission is under new ownership.
