Does anyone have one of these. Mississippi River Trapper. Seems to have black bone scales, excellent workmanship, new, still in box. doesn't look like ever carried. I bought it on ebay about a year ago for $30.00. Can't find anything on this forum. Hate the search! Google turns up nothing. Any help appreciated.

Scratch that last post. It is a TENNESSEE River Trapper. I haven't looked at it in a while and was just reading the posts here and decided to ask about it. All else is the same. Cant find any posts in the search here or on Google. The scales are like the red pocketworn on a Case. Excuse the dumb mistake please.

I have one. Nice knife , mine is put together pretty well. They were sold through Wal-mart.

They have been selling for anywhere from $40.00 to $70.00 depending on the time of day and day of the week. Very nice knife, there's one on eBay now:

TRT96 was the designation for that knife, Tennessee River Trapper, as noted. Production dates are sketchy in the information I have on them, but I believe they may have been first produced circa 2001. They were packed for Sam's Club sales as well as Wal-Mart. That is one of the issues I do not yet have, having missed it when the stores carried it (and never in large quantities that I can see), and it being uncommonly found on the secondary market so far. Some dealer may well cut open a case of a thousand next week and drive the price down. "eBay is like a box of chocolates....".

WalMart also carried this pattern in wood scales. A 296WC, with crimson birch dyed wood scales and threaded (:D ) bolsters.

Interesting! Thanks Bill! I think I've seen other patterns in the crimson birch. Do you know if they also were for wally's world, and which patterns they were?

Michael,
I wish I could be of more help. I remember seeing a stock pattern in Crimson Birch, at a gun show 3-4 years ago, but no other patterns at the WalMarts in my area. In fact, I never saw a TRT at any of the stores in the Phoenix area. Doesn't mean they didn't have any...but I used to check pretty often, when Schrade was such a prominent part of the sporting goods department.:(

As my wife tells me..."You're worthless as a gossip."

I picked up one of these at Wally when they were clearing them out...I believe there is a thread on here somewhere and they are a great knife to be sure!

I have 2 of the Crimson Birch knives. In addition to the trapper, there is also Codger's beloved knife. The blades are highly polished and the clip blade on each knife is hollow ground:

The surface of the blade is concave. Often accomplished by grinding the blade on a round surface, like the face of a wheel.

AYE! the Scotsman is too quick today.

Thanks for all the replies on the Tennessee Trapper. I have been itching to use this knife for an EDC since I got it, but was afraid it was a rare breed and use would degrade the collector value. I have a couple old Schrades I have been using for years for hunting, but they are getting a little thin in the blade. I hope this one, being stainless, will take and hold an edge like the high carbon blades I am using now. Thanks again.

If you want to preserve the TRT96 as a keeper, find one that someone else has used. Or else find the everyday production version, the 96OT Bearhead Trapper. Clemente does note that there was no UH version of this pattern, but there was a yellow handled version, 296OTY. A lot of us get a user and a keeper of our favorites. And some buy their knives only to use, after all, that is what they were designed and produced to be!
