Mistress bit wood, bit me, then got bitten herself!

So my brother GentleBen has had this pine/cedar jungle gym in has backyard for the past 3.5 years, and his little monsters wore the thing out. When I got there today it was leaning and in dire need of some INFI loving...so of course Ben and I obliged it with a few of our girls. You should probably know that up until a month-or-so ago, Ben thought his Cold Steel Mil Classic was a knife...that was until he fondled my BATACLE and TigerWarden...now he thinks differently, and that CS was sent off into the horizon.

I won't get too personal here, but these are some of the shots wifey took while we boys were playing in the woods.

Here's a shot just after we begun the beating:

And this is my hand after being bitten when the Mistress slipped from of my hand once.

Here's a little pic of an INFI blunder: We were setting up knives for a photo, and the NO was stuck in the wood horizontally. The BM was stuck in the top point down, and needed to be reset, but when it was swung down, it slid through the treated wood so easily it actually hit the spine of the NO.

I've read that INFI doesn't chip, my BM sure did. A nice, nasty chip missing out of the edge.

The NO now has it's first battle scar as well:

Here's a look at the poor jungle gym. 20 minutes later it was just a pile of kindling to be used in the firepit on those cool Miami nights (the two we get each year).

Btw...Hey Ham Solo...I KNOW you love your NOe, but that SFNO is a beautiful thing. If you haven't tried one, ya gotta.
And here's a gratuitous shot of my other woman...too bad she's gotta be leaving me for awhile. Hey Ban...check in, brother.

And now it's time for a bonfire!!!! Great shots mate! Gotta love the little teef you now have on your knives. Thanks for sharing.:)

Awesome pics! Nothing like a little backyard destruction.:D

is there any chance you could try to get a macro shot of the damaged area, specifically facing the edge, and at a slight angle from the other side?

infi shouldn't chip, and i'm curious what the area looks like up close.

Thats what I like to see INFI getting a nice old workout! Thanks for sharing the pics.......love yer work!:cool:

Killer pics. . . . Nothing INFI loves more than a good beating. . . . . :D

I don't believe that that is a chip. . . chips are curved, just like they are in glass. . . that looks more like your Mistress found a nail, or worse yet a deck screw. . . .deck screws and drywall screws are typically case hardened, which can make the surface of the screw harder than your knife!!! . . . If you look closely at it you'll note that the missing piece has either ripped or been sheared out of there. . . Very cool ! ! ! !

Nice job men!. . .Time for a drink or 2 or 8 or. . . well, you get the idea!!!

LVC...I looked HARD hoping it was just a rolled edge, but no dice...it is definitely a chip, and it's big and noticeable. I'll try to whip out wifey's macro lens tomorrow and get a better shot, but be warned, I am NO photographer.

My concern now is that in order to have the edge fixed I will hafta have a good bit of metal moved. Same as with the SFNO. I LOVE the shape of the SFNO, and do NOT want to have that changed.

So, here's a little review of the FBMLE:

This thing is a monster. VERY substantial. Everytime the sweet spot bit in, I felt like it could go straight through 2x4's or even 4x4's if I was strong enough to swing it through.

The slabs on it are WAY too thick for me, though. After the first 10-15 swings it kept trying to slide out of my hands, and did one time, resulting in a cut. I am very glad that I went ahead and ordered one of GrandSuave's d-guards. It kept the rest of my body safe, and is incredibly well made. The tan cobra stitch looks great with tiger slabs, and the lanyard was also very helpful. Brilliant idea to have the motorcycle links as connectors as well.

Back to the FBMLE: it was VERY easy to be confident putting all my weight behind a swing. The length of the blade made it so that I didn't have to be too close to whatever I was chopping.

The weight, however, did cause me some fatigue. That could be because I don't often chop things, but the knife IS heavy, and pretty often I felt my hand sliding all the way down the slabs to be stopped only by the d-guard. (Again, thanks GS).

The steel did very nice work against the treated/cured pine and cedar of the jungle gym. We killed multiple 2x4's and 4x4's, and until the Mistress tried to hook up with my Outlaw (obviously the wrong guy for her), the edge looked perfect.

For me, this knife would be the perfect chopper if the slabs were standard thickness. I know I could have gotten something else, but I love the LE combo and won't mind getting the slabs thinned...especially now that she's lest a tooth.

While I was at Ben's, I aso had the chance to work on the kydex dropleg SteelNut made for me a month ago. I had Ben follow GrandSuave's advice (and thanks one more time) and wrap the blade 3 times with painter's tape, then hit it with the heat gun. We were able to loosen the fit on the blade, so that it isn't wedged in, and also fix the pommel retention so that the d-guard fits better as well. Now it's close to perfect, with an audible snap as the blade is sheathed, and the ability to be carried tip-up.

I really like my Mistress, as well as the rig, but I hafta say...nothing beats that sabre SFNO for me. I'm a little hurt that it's got that little bite in the spine, but the truth is that it's a tool that I look forward to using a LOT more in the futre. And if it's ever necessary...there's always that Nuclear Warranty, right? ; )

Jerry,

I guess I could be wrong about what it's called, but there is no rolled edge. It's actually a missing piece of INFI. However--and this could be a marketing plus--it wasn't a nail that took out that chunk. It was the result of the edge of the Mistress hitting the spine of my SFNO. But It wasn't a very hard hit. I assume it has to do with the fact that edge was so thin versus the spine of the sabre-ground SFNO. When it happened Ben look at the knives and then at me and said, "I guess it takes INFI to hurt INFI."

If an edge is flexed hard enough to one side, it can cause a tear out, but that would have obvious indicators along the edges of where the metal is missing. from the image you posted the edge of the damaged area looks crisp and clean, rather then mashed or rolled, which is why I'd love to see other angles to get a better idea of what the overall effected area looks like. with chipped metal, you can see the dull rock like grain of the inner steel, though it may be to small to really see on that small an area.

if you send it back to jerry, I'm sure they'll do a fine job restoring the edge with as minimal of a geometry change as possible.

Man, those pictures make me wish I had an old wooden Jungle Gym!! Nice work boys!! IGM, glad I could be of service, I never really thought the D-guard would come in so handy, but I can imagine when swinging the big steel it would help keep your hand from sliding off. Glad you got your sheath to fit better:thumbup:

add a forward lanyard through the front handle hole. Put your hand through and twist a few times till tight. Even with a loose grip it can't to anywhere. It will keep your hands and feet and legs and bystanders much much safer.

Thanks for the suggestion, BFT. I'll try it next time. Btw...do you find that your mistress tries to slide right outta your hands when you're chopping?

Nice fun & great pics!!!

The ding in your mistress is probably a dent in the steel...
if you look thru a loop or magnifier, you will probably see a bulge around the area.
With a chip you would see ripped metal.

In any respect... it just adds character to her.
Let it be sharpened out over time.

Thanks for the cool pics and the FBM LE review.

To be quite honest, regardless of what the ding/dent/chip is, it sucks, but it was our fault. I'm hoping Ban will chime in and tell me what he can do.

I confess, I was the one who caused the boo boo, so I can confirm that it was indeed INFI vs. INFI. Like Li'l Foo says, I'm thinking it's probably a dent, because the edge of the BM connected perfectly with the spine corner of the SFNO. I'd bet the angle of the notch in the blade would match perfectly with the spine of the SFNO.

And yes, it was fun; and yes, the wood is destined for my backyard firepit. The play gym was becoming an eyesore, and while I could've taken it down with a chainsaw, it was INFInitely more satisfying to cleave it asunder in a most medievel manner.

Hey Ben, why don't you write up a little review of the BM and your SHe when you get a chance.

here's the short & sweet of it: Your BM kicked ass; my SH-E didn't perform as well because it doesn't have the heft of the BM, and also because it was dull as primetime TV (because I can't sharpen a knife worth a shi'ite).

It should be noted for the record that I didn't place any blame. We gotta get an Edge Pro Apex between the two of us.
