I had a friend show me the 1999 Cold Steel catalog. There is an entire page challenging anyone with a Battle Mistress to come forward so they'd get paid twice the retail price so they could compare it to their Trail Master.

Something about "unfounded" or "unproven" claims, unlike, they said, Cold Steel.

My friend was a little too smug in showing me this, so I began looking for online proof to smack the smug right out.

Unfortunately, I only found threads that had pictures that are now red X's....

Short of beating his Trailmaster to pieces with my FBM, I'm not sure what else to do here.

I did show him the few from Swamprat, but as he pointed out, those aren't INFI.

I also showed him the one of the BROKEN at the handle Cold Steel Recon Scout, so some of his "smug" was knocked away.

I know Jerry had posted about making a video showing the ability of these knives available.........any idea when?

Does ANYONE have some pics that would help smack the rest of smug outta my friend ?

Thanks !!

The above are a few links for you to read for general interest. there is much more than this, but these are some good ones when you get time to read.

Also, search under my name and look for all the threads of me abusing my SHBM's. I have one that has gone over 15,000 throws into wood stumps. most knives have broken at under 500 throws including some CS knives. I use to chop two chords of wood every winter with that knife and an 18 inch HI Ang Khola. I had to Baton the SHBM often through logs. Probably about 20 to 30 logs would need batoning per chord, so at least 60 logs batonned through by my SHBM per year for many years. NO OTHER knife I have ever owned lasted 1/5 as long before breaking except for the 18 inch AK.

here is another one for you. But really, if he likes his blade let him be. 5 years down the road of hard use, your FBM will still be here, the only way his will is if he babies it.

Busse Combat Knives test at the Blade Show!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jerry and I talked about doing a test at the Blade Show and we did just that. Unfortunately we could not make a big scene about it so we went out back and just whacked away at some 1" hemp rope. The test was a simple rope cutting test. He held the blade against the rope and pushed it through the hemp rope. Jerry wanted to show me that his basic line (Which I just picked up as a distributor) would do everything he claimed.

Up to this point all tests on Busse's knives where done in house without anyone outside of the Busse camp witnessing the results. Well not this time. We did this test right out in the open and many BladeForums members could watch the test. Several people came by and watched at least part of the test which went on for quite a while, nearly 3 hours!

Those who watched at least part of the test were:
Les De Asis, Kit Carson, Rob Simonich, Bob Taylor, Field & Stream magazine and many forum members plus several people I did not know.

The test was simple. We placed a 2X4 on a table and clamped it down. We made guides, to lay the rope down on the 1&1/2" track the rope would lay on, for the cut by simply drilling some screws into the wood. Then Jerry took out a HUGE roll of hemp from his van. Jennifer (Jerry's wife) and I both would count the cuts. We each had a calculator and simply added each cut as it went through.

We used a Basic #9 for the test. We marked the blade with a marker so Jerry would be able to easily see and use the same part of the blade. I was amazed Jerry wanted to do this test even though his hand is still recovering from his accident.

Anyway I will cut to the chase as I am still tired from the show and this very poorly written review is a Testament to that.

Jerry's previous rope cut test with a Basic #9 made it to 1,254 cuts. This is truly amazing but the fact was that he video taped this test and he told me the reason they stopped at that count was because he was running out of video tape. Well for our test he did not need a video tape as I witnessed the entire test from start to finish.

How many cuts did we get?
2,771!
And we only stopped there because we ran out of rope!

After the 2,000th cut I was still able to shave my arm! At the 2,500 mark it lost the ability to shave but still sliced through paper really well. Lori took several pics of me shaving my arm and I will post those soon as well as the pics of the test.

Folks this is the most amazing thing I have ever scene when it comes to knives. During the test I wondered if the knife was actually just getting buffed by the rope. We even had hit the screws on the board at least 6 or so times. I was truly impressed and this has wet my appetite for a more complete test of the Basic line as soon a they ship.

I am tired and must get some sleep so look for more posts later.

I love reading these reports... I have similar experience with my SHSHII, The Precious, and this experience is why I'll not buy other than INFI for field use. I have chopped, sliced and split with it in the field - it holds an amazing edge, and has very little deformation when I hit the rocks that are always where I seem to be. I LOVE MY INFI! :D And it loves me, really it does.... :)

Busse Basics
Jerry Busse chose SHOT Show to launch his long awaited production knives from Busse Combat Knife Co. With the backlog for his highly prized custom and benchmade blades extanding well over a year and prices on the secondary market going through the roof, this will at least ease the burden somewhat. The question is, what compromises were made to make the production knives affordable and producable?

One of the secrets to Busse's success has been his "INFI" steel. Credible reports praise it highly as tough with incredible edge holding, though to date Jerry has not released its composition, nor agreed to provide a knife for us to test. Working this steel is apparently not an easy chore and that is one of the reasons his knives take so long to produce. Jerry told me that the "Modified INFI" steel used in the new Combat Basics is very similar, but with reduced nickle and chromium to make them more workable. He insists the result is only a slight reduction in edge keeping and flexibility and has an impressive video he shows to support his claims. Once we get our hands on promised samples we'll see for ourselves how good they are.

The Basics come in four sizes: #3, #5, and #7 with 3, 5, and 7 inch blades respectively. The #9 has a 9 1/2 inch blade. Handles are molded rubber (the two smaller knives and two larger ones share the same handles) with a brass hollow rivit for a lanyard hole. The smaller blades are coated, but the big one is polished steel. The edge is ground assimetrically, with most of the grind on one side and only a short grind on the other, not quite a chisel grind. The standard Kydex sheath is able to be configured in a multitude of ways, depending upon how you like to carry. Pricing is $138, $178, $218, $258 respectively. Street prices will likely be a bit less and deliveries are expected to begin in a few months.

I love my Busse Blades far above any other knife and have beat and battered them and they have come out on top where other knifes I have tried had tips break and blades snap...handles have broken off and blades chipped so bad they looked serrated, but I still get others. Even though they are not INFI and they all offer something. Whether it be pure entertainment in breaking it or just an aesthetically pleasing blade.

But if I had to have only 1 knife to run through Hell in while wearing gasoline soaked underwear...it would be my Straight Handle Battle Mistress. I am glad I am not in that position to own only one and I say get others knives, try them and at the end of the day you will see why it all comes back to Busse.

"modified INFI"? Oh no....I'm scared. I love my INFI the way that it is. I certainly don't want a "slight reduction in edge keeping..."

Most folks around here say that no one ever noticed a difference. :D

I think you would have to go to the extreme before you noticed a difference, so you are correct the M-INFI is awesome. It just does everything a little less than INFI but not enough to make a difference to the normal user. Hell, it took Cliff 2 years of hard abuse to destroy a basic 7. Most knives would have fallen in a month.

those are nice sheaths. You probably could have adapted a few of those to Busses.

We should just take a BM and a Trail Master and run the "Cold Steel Proof" tests side-by-side. Problem may be finding a trail master on this forum. ;)
