Has any manufacturer ever considered making a modular balisong system held together by torx screws where you can simply pick out a blade, handles, latch (and optional clip) and screw them together?

Think about the options:

You only pay full price once for the first bali. Then you save up for a $$$$ exotic metal blade and install it. Then you might consider getting brass handles. At this point you torx together a second knife out of the old parts. Then the exotic metal blade breaks, but you like your brass handles so you torx them together with your original blade and latch to make a carry knife until you can get a double edged blade... and maybe get those featherweight handles....

You get the idea.

That's the thinking behind the MT Tachyon. The new Nemesis blade will be interchangable with the current handles. As for any further replacement blades, the process is still too new to say.

The other option is to have custom blades made for you that fit existing handles, as I did by Bob Lum for the BM 42 handles. Chuck has one as well by Rob Simonich.

Benchmade's original plan was to make blades for the 42 interchangeable. Instead they decided that it would degrade quality too much to have the blade be easily removed, currently, doing so voids your warrantee.

Like Tony said, that's the general idea behind the Tachyon. But if I've gotten it all straight, there can't be too much variation in the blade because of the way the handles are made. I don't have any pics to proove it, but I've seen it, though, that one of the 'chips' in the sandwich construction is formed after the blade. (Please, correct me if I'm wrong!) This probably makes it possible to switch the blade around, and it would work just as fine, but if you are thinking of getting a tanto, I think there's a problem.
