Mixing epoxy

The epoxy I use comes in pint cans and is the consistency of thick syrup. I find it hard to measure out small quantities of "part A" and "part B" for mixing. Does anyone have any ideas of how to neatly and accurately measure out a thimble full of this stuff without making a mess? Is there any two-nozzle dispenser available (like the Devcon stuff) that I could fill up and use? I'm sure other people have this problem too.

Thanks.

Get medical syringes from the local pharmacy or Dr's office. The kind that the needle just friction fits onto (non luer lock) They work great, especially for epoxy's that are not 1 to 1 mixes. I use a 3cc and a 10cc for mixing acraglass (4 to 1 ratio) Don't store them right next to each other though, as the vapor off of the hardner makes the resin get sticky after a while.

If the mix is 1:1 I would get a Redi-mix glue gun. It is for the T-88 Adhesive I use on my ultralight plane, but it would work for almost any 1:1 epoxy.

It will squirt equal parts of the resin and hardener. Plus if you put on the mixer tubes it will mix the epoxy also.

You can use it with or without the mixer tubes.

This is where I get mine at http://www.aircraft-spruce.com/spruce/pages.cgi/catalog_order
Click on online catalog then type redi-mix in the search engine and there you are

I use the redi-mix system alot, I really like it plus it doesn't cost to much either.

Disposable syringes work well. If your epoxy is very thick you may find it easier to draw into the syringe if you heat the components a little bit before sucking it in. If you're thrifty you may not like the syringe expense. In that case...

...another way is to do it by weight, but you need a small scale like a reloader's ballance. Stop by a church and ask for a couple small disposable plastic communion cups. Weigh the empty cups so that you can subtract their weights in later calculations. Fill one to the brim with resin and the other to the brim with hardner. Weigh each cup. You now can figure a weight ratio for the components. Convert the volume ratios for mixing to weight ratios.

When you mix your epoxy use popsicle sticks from a hobby shop to scoop out your components and to stir. Use aluminum foil as a surface for weighing and mixing. Using weight you can probably be 30% more accurate than with trying to use volumes.
