has anyone mixed kydex sizes for a sheath..??

say for example sandwiching a sheath one side .060 the other .093??

and finally anyone use any .060 for sheaths?? I've just come into 8' of it and was considering maybe for neckers or something lightweight, seems really flimsy so I though to get use out of it maybe I could back it with heavier material...

thanks..

View attachment 251663 These sheaths are .06 worked ok, .08-.093 would have probalby suited better but .06 did the job.. .06 is much more suited for smaller blades IMO, also you have to keep a watchful eye when heating as it melts and heats up a lot faster than thicker kydex, it tends to warp in the press easier as well, harder to maintain a straight line.

Rob,

I bought a 4x8 sheet of .060 and the only thing I trust if for is firesteel holders. That being said I know that Dennis (Entrek) uses .060 exclusively for his knives... but I replace alot of those for customers. As far as sandwiching goes I have made plenty of sheaths using .080 fronts w/.093 backs. I won't even use .060 for the smallest knives...... the only exception for me would be if it was a flat "backer" for a .080 front.

If backed with .093 it might be fine for what your doing though.

edit to add:

Just read statement above and it's definitely true that it warps. I don't know that it warps in the press but from my experience in general the thinner Kydex just cools down much faster than a thicker piece. You'll get much more definiton from a .080 piece than .060 only because it's stay's hot/warm longer.

I am no expert but I have used some for smaller knives and I think it works fine ;that being said if I made sheaths for sale to the public I would want them as thick as is reasonable for safety. I would say for sure they would work for the side facing away from you on a necker and use some thicker stuff on the person side.
As a side note it does seem much thinner and flimsy before you mold it ,just make a sheath for a small knife and beat on it and see what you think ,it really is up to you if you are comfortable with it. If you are looking to get rid of some let me know;)

I won't use .060 for anything anymore. I have found that it will break and bend too easily. Once it bends it leaves a serious weak spot. I have had it tear almost like paper.

.060 is too thin IMO feels too light duty.

I would try and use it for layered sheaths, that are kydex leather kydex to give a inlay kind of look or liners inside leather sheaths
