Mnandi - can you open them one-handed?

I've been wanting to try a Mnandi but have been wondering if it's possible to thumb one open one-handed. Also, I've seen reference to the old nick style and new nick. What's the difference? Could someone post a pic of old and new together? Thanks in advance.

The new style Mnandi is much more difficult to open one handed than the old style. Some of it has to do with the detents, but it's mostly because of the nail nick. The old style Mnandi as well as some of the new ones had the old nail nick. It was sandblasted and slightly rough to give you grip. Most of the new style and the ones currently being made use the new style nail nick which is stonewashed like the top of the blade, hence making smooth and not grippy. I do notice detents have changed ever so slightly as well. Some people use the pinch method and you can open it one handed, but it's more manipulation. With practice you can open the new style one handed, but in my experience, the old style was far easier and refined. Between the two styles, I would take the old style Mnandi hands down.................it's one of the few changes CRK has ever made that many just do not like. It's the reason I have very few Mnandi now.

I only have the new nail nick but I can open it one handed. I do it by pinching with my index finger and thumb to get it started and then use my thumb to open it all the way. It took a little bit of practice but it's now second nature.

In my opinion, old style nail nick is great ! Easy to open... The new style I just wouldn't have. To me they are harder to open. I don't think they are cut as deep. I got lucky on my last one I bought, new pivot, new clip, but old nail nick. Sorry no pics at this time..

Absolutely yes, with no preference of old nick or new. I pinch the nail nick between my thumb and finger, and flick the body of the knife away from the blade. By doing it this way I can do either a right of let-handed knife with either hand.

Yes, I can one hand open my old nail nick Mnandi easy.

+1. I open my new nick the same way with no problem. If you work at it a few times, it's easy as long as you have halfway decent finger dexterity. No worries.

I can open the new style one handed with the pinch method also, but I much prefer the old style. Not only for the nail nick, but because of the larger blade pivot shield. Looks far better than the receeded version to me. I like both clips though.

For me, with large size hands, the old Mnandi is not easy to open with one hand. It was the reason I did not pick up a 2002 at a show last weekend. There are a lot of other knife designs with the same size blade that are easier to open one handed.

The blade pinch method you show here is one of the ways I was referring to above. I also can turn the knife upside-down and flick it, then roll it into my hand.
