Mnandi Damascus small hole?

Does anyone know the purpose of this small hole and the polished area on the clip side near the pivot? This hole has me stumped, lol. I assume the polished area is to make the action smoother riding over the damascus? Thanks in advance!

the whole is for the detent ball to rest is thus keeping the knife in the closed position
