Mnandi one handed opening?

I'm toying with the idea of buying a Mnandi for EDC use and it's not clear to me if the fingernail groove is deep enough to open the knife one handed. Can it be easily opened one handed? I have a Cabelas Buck 110 that never gets carried since I always have to put down what I want to cut before opening the knife.

Thanks

If you search the site you'll see quite a few references that confirm how easy the Mnandi is to open one handed. I have a few of them and hardly ever open them with two hands.

Yes, it can be opened easily one-handed. BUT, it is not ambi-dextrous one-handed opening, as the liner is higher than the frame on the other side, and therefore it is extremely difficult for me to open with my left hand. I suppose I could grind it down, but at the moment I don't have the tools, time or inclination. It would also damage resale value - but I have no intention of selling, so I will probably get around to doing it sometime.

I had bought it in the belief that it would be possible to open it ambidextrously, as I am left handed, but can use either hand for opening a blade. I can only use one-handed opening with my right hand.

It is a lovely little knife though, and even people who hate knives still think it's a beauty. I have the box elder version - although not as good a grain as I would have liked i.e. a bit plain compared to some box elder grain I have seen.

CRK does offer the Mnandi in a left handed configuration also. Very good point Romanx

Easy to open one handed and I have fairly small hands an a touch of arthritis. I actually find it as easy to open as my small regular seb.

It is easy to open with one hand.. if the edge of the "nail" groove is relatively sharp.
Most of them are that way and are easy to open.

Hi Peregrin,

Yeah, I knew they offered it in left-handed, but I assume the problem would then be that you would not be able to open it easily with your right hand.;)

I was wondering what the reason was for even offering it left-handed if it was ambidextrous. Now I know LOL.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great knife, but I would prefer if I could open it easily with either hand. At some stage I suppose I will get around to grinding it, but I need the right tools, and a bit of practice with some scrap metal, as it is a really nice knife and I don't want to ruin it.

In conclusion (from me anyway), a really nice dressy knife that is easy to open and close one-handed, but not really easy to open and close one-handed ambidextrously. You really will love how well put together it is.:)

The reason they have it left handed is so that you can close the blade with your left hand.

For me it's very hard to open the Mnandi one handed. The slim handle and opening groove position make that I can't get a good grip of both without keeping the small and ring finger in the way of the blade. I know most people can do it but not me.
I can easily open other small knives one handed, including the Umfaan.
If I were you I'd try one to see how it works.

flava has a good point. Sure, the Mnandi is easy for most people to open one-handed but you may have large hands and not find it as easy. On the plus side, if you cannot open it, there are plenty of people here waiting to take it off your hands . . .

Thanks for the help everyone. I don't have large hands and find my small spydie kopa and kershaw easier to open than larger folders. I just ordered a Mnandi from New Graham (and a spiderench for my dad for xmas).

This sucks. I already have too many expensive hobbies and I've think I've recently picked up another :(

Fzen, welcome to the formus. Your order will ship today. Hope you enjoy the Mnandi.
Thanks for choosing NGK.

I was a little anxious to get the new toy and kicked off a bout of sharpening and touching up my carrying knives, hunting knives and kitchen knives. If the Mnandi doesn't get here soon I might not have any arm hair left to test the edge on
