Just received my first Mnandi and noticed the blade is a little off center toward the non-lock side of the handle.

Is this normal?

also...

Does anyone know what is the most durable material CR offers as an inlay for the Mnandi?

Thanks!

My Mnandi (which I have in my pocket at this moment), has the blade at dead center, so I can't help there.

As far as the inlay is concerned, they are only doing the inlays with organic materials, mostly hardwood.

Unless someone knows something I don't, Lignum Vitae is the most durable hardwood that CRK uses.

Lignum Vitae was used for stuff like bowling balls and ships ball bearings before we figured out how to make round things out of steel and make bowling balls out of plastics.

Besides being dense, Lignum Vitae is in essence, "self-oiling", so it is virtually maintenence-free. Lignum Vitae is Latin for "living wood".

Hi James

I´ve checked my two mnandis.

One blade is exactly in the middle.

The blade of the other knife is a little bit more on the non-lock-side of the handel. But you must watch very exactly to see it. For me it is so slightly, that it doesn´t matters.

regards

I believe all wood inlays that CRK uses are stabilized, in which an epoxy resin is forced into the wood pores under vacuum pressure. This makes them all durable, hard, and essentially waterproof and dimensionally stable. I would not expect any one particular stabilized wood to be more durable than another.

I bought my Mnandi at Blade 2002 in Atl., have carried it alot and it's seen alot of light duty. I've done mechanical inspection for several of my 56+ years and have a good proven eye when it comes to such things as spotting an off-center situation, such as you refer to, and if my Mnandi's blade is off, I sure can't tell it!
Do remember........CRK's crew are all human beings as are both Chris and Anne. They produce high quality cutlery using human eyes and human hands for many of the operations and IMHO shouldn't be judged by super-human robotic standards in all cases.
Just my $0.02 worth!

I hope my post didn't sound negative toward the Mnandi, I really do love the knife. I was kinda hoping that mine was the "norm" and I wouldn't have to send it in.:(

Thanks everyone!

I'm not sure you understood my post, James. You still sound as if anything less than absolute symmetry and perfection are warranty issues and necessiatate that the offending knife "MUST" be sent back to CRK for rectification. I'm sure they'd "correct" the "problem" but the issue of getting along in the real world in spite of being afflicted with perfectionism remains. Been there, doing that! :-)

My Mnandi seemed off center when I first got it. I took it apart cleaned it and put some flourinated grease on it and carefully put it back together. After that the blade was perfectly centered. You might want to try that before you send it in. Good luck.;)

Larry S.,

Thanks for your input but I disagree. I believe for a knife in this price range it is not to much to ask for the blade to centered. ;)

James,

I also had a similar experience and called the CRK shop. They advised a take down and re-assemble, as Scott Dog has done. This did not do the trick, so they advised me to send it back to the shop. It returned home to me with a perfectly centered blade.

CRK will make things right for you if you give them the opportunity. They also believe that the blade should be centered on all of their folders.

James - My Mnandi's blade is perfectly centered. If disassembling the knife doesn't help, send it back to CRK. I'm sure they'll make it right for you.

James is right. A knife at this price level should be centered. Chris wouldn't want any other way. If you're not happy, send it back. CRK will make it right.:) ;) :p

I tried the take down and re-assemble route as soon as I received the knife and it improved but was still off center. I also tried holding the lock off the blade to see if that was what was pushing the blade over and it made no difference so I'm not sure what is making it sit off center. I'm sure CRK will make it right.

I really love this knife! I'm already thinking of purchasing another to get me by while this one is back at CRK.:D
