Mnandi Questions

Hi,

I'm thinking about picking up a Mnandi and have a couple of questions.

Is the pocket clip somewhat rounded? I work in an environment with a lot of nice furniture. The clip on my current knife has sharp edges and will scratch the chairs I brush up against.

I really like a straight edge. Has there ever been any talk of doing one of these in more of a modified wharncliffe shape?

Thanks,
Dave

The clip is rounded and quite smooth. I imagine it may still be able to damage wood furniture if you bump into it hard enough. I honestly don't like to clip the Mnandi to my pants/jeans, but rather keep it in the leather slip case when in the pant pocket. I only clip it to front shirt pockets if applicable.

I have never personally seen any other blade shape other than the current one.

Yes, as said above, the clip is definitely rounded. It's radiused in both directions (corners and front to back), and yeah, I'd agree that it could damage wood if pressed hard enough, though it'd be much more of a dent than a scratch or scrape if you know what I mean. Think pressing your fingernail into soft wood vs. dragging a fork tine across it.....?

I carry mine in the calf skin sleeve too, and you'll likely find that more comfortable. Even on slacks the clip's a bit tight, and on jeans it's quite awkward to clip to the pocket given the thicker hem.

At any rate, it's a no-brainer of a purchase, regardless of what furniture's in the room!! :)

And also, same here.... I don't believe there's any plans for any different profile.

Thank you for the replies. I've mostly been carrying traditional knives for the last 4 or 5 years. I'm missing the ease of access provided by a pocket clip and one hand opening.

ZippoThisKnifeThat, can you expand on this...
I honestly don't like to clip the Mnandi to my pants/jeans,

I'm wondering if most people use the leather sleeve on the Mnandi to protect the knife or because the pocket clip is too tight?

Thank you,
Dave

I have had many mnandi and I have come to love the little knife. I still have 3 of them. The clip is nicely rounded. As stated above, if you push hard or it brushes hard enough, it will damage the wood as the titanium is much harder. But there are no sharp edges, so a slight brush will just roll over it so to speak and should not damage it. The clip on the mnandi is milled from a solid piece of titanium and was designed to clip to a dress shirt and to look like a pen in pocket. It is a stiff clip and does not have the spring to it like the sebenza clip. The thin material of a pocket in a dress shirt is very thin. The clip is not designed to clip to thick demium in jeans pockets. Its just not that type of knife. When I carry mine, I either carry it in the leather sheath, or just loose in my right front pocket.

The mnandi is an awsome knife and I personally think it is perfect in every way. There is nothing that I dont like about it. And even though its small, it has heavy duty sebenza toughness. I have used some of mine for things almost suited for a large sebenza or umnumzaan and there is not even a blemish. The mnandi is definately one of my favorite CRK's..............Get One, You Will Be Glad You Did.

This is exactly how I feel. I don't like having such a small knife clipped to my jean pockets although it is a "low ride" clip, but even more so I don't like the feeling of possibly bending the clip out or damaging any other part of the knife by forcing it over the material of denim or dickies work pants.

I just prefer to put it in the slip case deep in my pocket, in the coin pocket, or clipped to the pocket of a shirt.

Thanks guys. I understand. Sounds like a great knife that I have to get one day soon. Take care,
Dave

I picked up the Jigged Rosewood Mnandi that Fooj had for sale. Sweet knife. I really like it. And the pocket clip is excellent. It works just fine with my slacks and shorts.

I'm surprised it took me so long to try one out. I have a feeling it's going to be in my pocket on a regular basis.

Thanks for your help.

I have a Sharpmaker and have used the Ultra Fine rods in the 40 degree slots. What's this about the microbevel? Do you do the 40 degree first and then finish with the 30 degree angle? Or, do you do the 30 degree first and finish with the 40?

Thanks,
Dave

Not sure on the sharpening angles, Ill let someone else tackle that. But I'm very jealous I miss my Mnandi and must get another soon!

Our friend Fooj has some nice knives, doesn't he? Great purchase you made there.

Putting a "microbevel" with a Sharpmaker means using the 30º angles for your initial sharpening, or back-bevel, then switching to the 40º slots for the finish edge.

FWIW, I only use the 40º slots for all my CR knives and they stay quite sharp. I know that some people like to take their blades to very fine angles, but with CR's S30V steel and their blade grinds, I've never been dissatisfied with the sharpness I get at 40º. Keeps an edge longer, and is easier to maintain IMO.

Thanks guys. I'm going to stick with the 40 and keep it simple.

Take care,
Dave

I really like it. I think I've found the one that will be in my pocket for a long time. It's perfect. It's cured my want a new knife itch that I've had for 5 years.

And the pocket clip is superb. It doesn't give the "got a knife in my pocket" look and that's nice for healthcare work.

The ergonomics are excellent. I like the ablity to take it apart and...I just like everything about it. Thanks CRK and Bladeforums!

How does the Mnandi clip work for dress slacks, wool & microfiber? I have been thinking of picking up a nice gentleman's folder and the Mnandi sure has my attention.

Thanks,
David

David,

The clip is very nice. Some people have said it's too tight for jeans and thicker material. It's no problem on any of my slacks, shorts and anything I wear. I don't know about wool and microfiber.

I was concerned that it wouldn't work on my slacks and it's no problem at all. I have lots of knives and they are mostly customs. This clip is awesome.

Get a used one on the forums. If you don't like it then flip it and you will be fine. They hold their value like any popular Rolex model. You can't go wrong.

Dave,

Thank you for the reply. I am very likely to pick one up, it looks like a perfect knife for me.
