Mobile Mouse Pad Solution! Scary Sharp INFI!

I tried the mouse pad and sandpaper approach sharpening my knives some time ago. Since it has worked great for me, I wanted a slim mobile solution I could bring with me in the backpack. :p

So I took a rectangular piece of wood, rounded off a part for handle and then glued strips of mouse pads on 3 sides and a piece of leather on the 4th side.

Then I added some screws so it’s easy to attach and remove the strips of sandpaper. I have so far used 220, 400 and 1000 grit. Then I use something called Autosol Metal Polish. I apply it on the leather and let it try before I give the edge a final workout. Works great! :)

But pictures say more than words:

It's Friday evening/night here in Southeast Asia and I am busy drinking Glenlivet. But I will take a picture of the edge on one of my Busse during the weekend.\

Thanks!

That device would be great for sharpening a Khukri or a recurved blade such as the mojo.

I've been thinking about making portable mousepad/sandpaper device, and now I think I will.

That looks like a great idea. I made a 2 sided strop for my Bark Rivers, now I think I will try one of these for my Busse blades. Thanks for the idea.

Thank you all! It doesn't take long to make one, so enjoy! :)

Oh, yes- I will post some edge pictures later today.

Awesome idea. I remember one of the RATS, a while back, using something like an emory board for this. I love great ideas like this. Gets the old gears turning. ;)

That is a darn awesome idea  I may have to try one as a portable sharpening solution. I would use leather on all four sides because I find the mouse pad too soft for my personal taste. Thanks for the great idea

Thank you all! And for those of you making this for yourselves- enjoy and please let me know if you come up with improvements on the original concept.

Then here is a picture of the edge as promised. This is my BATAC CG since my FBMLE, BATAC LE and Custom AD- all still have the factory edges. All are users, but have so far only required light tough up on the leather strop.

I have not gone for the most beautiful edge here, but as long as it’s shaving sharp- I am ok.
