I just got my complimentary copy of the RKS newsletter in the mail today great stuff. On the back it had a picture of a beautiful knife with sleek lines, and a fine point. It was labeled a Mod 8 trout & bird.By comparison the Mod 8 in my current catalog looks much more like a short fighting/hacking type blade.I have never held one but I love the old style and am not so sure of the new one.Does any one know when the style was changed and why?Cleaning trout and grouse or doves needs a fine point and the new one looks rather blunt. The randall i have my eyes on next is the mod 7,but after seeing the old trout & bird thats the one I would love to have.I would love to find an old one, stained, scratched, well used it wouldn't matter,i am kind of po'folks and couldn't afford an un-used one probably. Thanks for the news letter Rhett, you will get my 20 bucks for membership soon.

You can still buy the old style Model 8 from Randall. It's listed under the non-catalog knives. They changed the style just a few years ago, I'm not exactly sure when, Rhett can likely answer that.

Perry,I checked out the non-catalog II knives and it shows a knife called an old mod 8,but its still a lot wider blade profile than the one on the newsletter. This knife is as svelte as a Formula 1 racer, think muskrat skinner, california clip,or Daryl Hannah slender.

This is a guess but I think the blade change evolved sometime in the 1960's. Dr. Bob Stamper, (Indiana member, big game hunter and and all around great fellow) says he bought his knife in the early 1960's. The sheath is a brown-button Johnson. /// Rhett

Willis I have an auction going on right now on ebay for a Randall bird and trout circa 1970 with brass caps and a stainless blade. It also has the ivory micarta or ivorite handles with a nice grain to them. Its engraved and the auction well be up in another day.

I have another one with a stag handle from the 70's and the brass caps but this one isn't stainless and it will probably go for less money than the one with the stainless blade and the micarta.

Both of these knives are my Father in Laws he is just getting rid of his knives and I am keeping a few myself.
My ebay user name is Stryyder just check it out if your interested.
