Mod A Framelock Into A Liner Lock?

Is there any technical reason scales can't be put on both sides of a frame lock to to give a better grip? Essentially making it into a liner lock?

I realize it would need to be tapped for screws/pins or epoxied for the scale's attachments.

What say you? Thanks.

Yeah it can totally be done... Just make sure you don't get them overly thick, you also may have to make a relief for the lockbar on the lockside scale (so you don't have unnecessary detent drag). They also need to be pretty flat for this to work. here's a k2 farid I did like that...

Thanks. That looks really well done. It seems to be the best of both worlds in the frame lock vs liner lock wars.

yeah I'm doing something similar on the mid-tech's I'm hopefully going to be making in the next few months... .090" thick liners (almost thick enough to be a framelock), lockbar insert, and scales on the outside.

Sounds good. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I was the guy who wrote you asking about adding scales to a Real Steel S571. You said it probably wouldn't be worth the expense. The problem was with the chamfers. I'd suggest a Megalodon but it has similar contouring.

Yea or nay?

I don't think scales would work on that one either :( unless you could find a cnc shop that could basically mill out the perfect chamfer on the underneath side of the scales hehe

Or by hand I would guess. Depending on the scale material.

That reminds me, I want to send you send you two other folders to put razor sharp edges on. A Shirogorov F3 and a Massdrop Laconico Keen.

Some liner locks have a lock bar thicker than frame locks. I like liner locks because of borh scales. I love frame locks but I don't like some of the cutouts on them to make them spring. IFor example the hindere xm 18. That cuout makes that part the same thickness as some liner lock. That didn't stop me from getting 3 of them. O a scale on both sides would be nice.

Agreed. Liner locks can be, and often are, handier due to their scale material's grip. Thus my interest in finding a (next to great) frame lock and craft scales to cover the works side. The Megalodon seems like a good candidate. Has anyone done this to a Hinderer? And if not, why not?

For instance, at what point do the above mentioned features exceed accepted weight parameters?

It seems as some knives will make it more difficult than others . Xm18 has a liner and g10 scale. It seems tricker to get thickness right on lock side. Show side scale would need to be thickened to match.
This seems easier on a full titanium. That way both sides can have an equal thickness.
If only zt would bring back the 560 or 300 and put a scale on the lock side.

I did just remember that hinderer made the xm 18 skinny. It is thinner than standard . It looks like full titanium then scales would make it the size of a fatty.
