Anyone own/seen one of these? I'm looking for feedback on it, especially the kydex sheath system's "carryability". They have a real nice write up on the Masters of Defense site about all the reasearch and development put into Ayoob Razorback, but I'm trying to find out if it's "hype" or not. Any input/opinions welcome. Thanks for your time.

I've seen a lot of references to this knife because I was interested in it, too. From what I have been able to gather, the knife is WAY, WAY too thick for its size, so as a result it cuts and stabs poorly. Considering that is the purpose of the knife, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
I haven't seen anything about the sheath itself, however, although in my experience sheaths are easily replaceable and you can get a Kydex sheath custom made that suits your needs for around $30.
From my own point of view, I think the research and reasoning behind the knife are sort of negated by what it is. I mean, the knife is supposed to look like a kitchen knife so that it is less conspicuous, but if you get caught with a kitchen knife in concealed carry in a Kydex sheath, no cop in his right mind will say "Oh, you must be on your way to the kitchen!"

I think the way the knife actually looks totally negates this logic. If you're going to carry a fixed blade for a defense knife, you may as well carry one that works right because you're screwed if you get caught with any of them.

I concurr. The blade is very thick. I couldn't really cut much of anything with the edge since it was ground so steep (over 30 degrees, I'd say). It seemed to be pretty much just a pig sticker (no offense intended, that's what it just seemed like to me). I liked the handle. It was quite comfortable for as small as it was, and it was basically indestructable. The sheath was...okay. It's utility was proportional to the cost of the knife.

You might have a decent edge on that knife if you laid the bevels flat onto a belt sander and gave it a "zero edge," Scandinavian style, with no secondary edge bevel. 154CM or ATS34 should be able to take a bit of heat without losing its temper.

Combine that thick saber-ground blade with a secondary edge bevel, and you have a knife that's not much good for cutting chores, and doesn't inspire much confidence for slashing. Instead it seems to be designed to as a "sticker."

Now there are some jurisdictions, like mine, where the most benign and utilitarian fixed blade knife with a point, discretely carried, can be called a "dirk or dagger." Now if it's a purpose-built sticker, with the words, "Masters of Defense" and "Lethal Force Institute" etched onto the blade . . . . There's another reason to take the sides of that blade to the grinder!

"Yes, your honor, it was originally marketed as a deadly dirk or dagger, but I altered it into a wholesome woodcrafty puukko."

Lee, keep your money and spend it on some other knife.
I traded the Ayoob Razorback NIB for a Genesis I and I'd rather have the Genesis with me then the Razorback which to me although constructed/finished very solid/beautifull was nothing more then a flattened icepick and not even that sharp.

Cheers,

Bagheera

I appreciate the input guys. That's exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to spend my money on something else! Thanks.

Hogwash. The blade on this thing is almost identical to the blade on the HALO III, and I don't hear any of these complaints about that knife. If you read MOD's writeup, then you know that Ayoob designed this knife for close quarter combat, within 10 feet, to stab and slash. That's what the knife was made for. The Kydex rig is ok, I'm not much for kydex to begin with, but it is definitely adequate for any conceal carry situation. I take mine camping, have had no problems cutting anything, and wouldn't trade mine in! And the grip is great, very positive.

My never to be humble opinion, of course....
