So, I'm admittedly very new to this... I see folks posting stories and pictures of mods, though, that involve stripping the blades and dipping them in things that -- to me -- seem corrosive. Doesn't this ultimately shorten the blade's useful lifespan in some way?

Sorry for the n00b question.

Stripper is Corrosive to the epoxy. although prob after a very very long time it might affect the steel. As for the blue bleach etching mod that I do alot, Yeh that is forcing corrosion by starting a chemical reaction, but once the etch is achieved, soap and water and some ammonia stops the reaction and thus the harm to the steel

There's a classic thread where a guy used his BK2 to chop, baton, cut, carve an insane amount of stuff. Rusty lawnmowers, concrete, a fridge, etc etc. After each round he would sharpen it and clean it back up. At the end, the shape had changed noticeably but I believe it's still a completely viable and awesome BK2.

Compared to that, a little stripper etc is nothing.

A thousand years from now, when all that's left standing is robots and cockroaches, and hybrid robot/cockroach archaelogists are excavating campsites to try to piece together the story of humanity's downfall, I suspect the Becker knives they find will still be perfectly usable.

Anyone have a link to that? I keep hearing about it.

I just did a search here on BF then searched Google and cant find it.

Would love to see it.

Stripping the coating will not cause any harm to the steel, chemical dipping might cause major damage/corrosion, depending on the substance used.

And thats my smart moment of the day.....;)

Theres are part three of that test floating around somewhere, but I didn't have the time to find it for you.

Its that thread that pushed me to buy a becker to be honest. I'm kind of a fan of "overkill engineering" (to me, its about confidence in my tools/cars/gear), and the BK2 is certainly that.

And back on topic...

I've never quite understood the desire for etching, but I also can't really see how it would be bad for the blade. Certainly its corrosive, but as long as its cleaned off, and its a negligible amount, and the material underneath should not be affected. I mean, the etching is not as deep as the BKT and BK2 markings on any of our knives, and that hasn't caused them to break on us yet :).

Becker knives are awesome. BeckerHeads are awesome. The whole Becker community is awesome.

Knives that are reasonably priced. Can be modded to your exact liking. If you make a mistake, it is no big deal really, just get another & gift the mistake away if you want. If not keep it to try other mods on. You like what you like. Not all knife makers like what you like. Get one you want & tweak it to your liking.

when they open that tomb, i will emerge, holding all Beckers :> some will even have been etched with the blood of Chuck Norris and perhaps a little pitted.

they shall not leave my grasp, even if i have to live 10,000 years :) moo hah hah.

I don't post many pictures of myself, but Moose and trade have posted a few.

Who the heck would even own a knife that wouldn't chop a hole in a brick or cut a lawnmower in half.
