MOD CQD I/II Question

I was looking in the handle of my CQD and I noticed that there are (for lack of a better description) a couple of silver "pucks" in the handle, under the grip tape. They are circular, maybe 1/4 inch in diameter. Does anyone know what these are? It's particularly important to me, as I was wondering if I could just remove the grip tape when it got ugly. Is the grip tape holding these things in?

I looked at mine, and it has these, too. I'm guessing they were there to plug up holes in the handles that were used to place the handle slabs in a CNC machine for shaping. The "pucks" are probably just to plug the holes for the grip tape. Doesn't seem that removing them would alter the functioning of the knife...
