A friend of mine from basic training is in 4th BCT here in the 101st Airborne Division. They get home in March.....he and I always we're avid knife fanatics, and preferred only the best in knives. In the 3 months I've been back from Iraq, he and I communicated on our latest and greatest knife finds. He then asked me "Do you remember the MOD CQD Mark 1 which I bought a while back?"
Yes, I said.....he then told me how their MRAP rollover into a canal during a partol. The MRAP was hit by a Deep Buried IED, and it rolled over into the water. My buddy was a dismount in the back, and had his 4 point seatbelt on.....the cabin filled with water, and hit his seatbelt release; no use. It was jammed. (Lowest fucking bidders building our shit) and he immediately reached for the seatbelt cutter that the unit requires be worn on your IOTV (body armor).....to his dismay, it wasn't there. Fell out of its mollee sheath during the initial roll. So he grabbed his CQD Mark 1 from his pocket, and cut his seatbelt straps with the cutter on the handle. Freeing himself, and assisting the other 4 guys in his squad out of the MRAP. Mind you, all of this happened in a matter of seconds.....but his quick thinking helped save his, and others lives that day. I'm thankful he bought that knife.....and I now know that he is closer to coming home, and closer to him and I being able to hang out, relax, and continue to collect our knives and guns that bring us so much joy.
