I was at the knife store today and saw a MOD Hornet for sale for $125. Is that a fair price for it? How's the lockup? Any blade play? Pros and cons? Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give.

With an MSRP of $190, I think its a nice price.

And from what I've heard about MOD, there shouldn't be any blade play and the blade should lock up tighter than tight!

Very nice knife in a very handy size. The grip takes a quick getting used to, but then lends to a very secure feel. Lock-up is exceptional and mine didn't have any blade play. Very nice package, I think, and $125 is a good price.

i personally find the hornet to be harder to open compared to the other MOD folders
but all you need to do it to loosen the pivot pin slightly and use some locktite
the thumbstud needs some getting used to, but this knife is great for all the small nitpicking i do :)

in case it wasn't easy to divine from my above paragraph : BUY~! :D

My Hornet had vertical blade play right out of the box!

I sent it back to MOD and they fixed it and returned it asap. No problems now, and lock up is very tight and secure.

I was a little disappointed with the ergonomics of the handle - it looked more comfortable then it actually is. It is also a little smaller than I thought it would be.

All in all, it is a well made knife, but sees very little EDC for the reasons outlined above.

I second all the above.
Exceptional quality like early MT.
Handy Blade.
You will get used to the handle.
Lock is sturdy. It´s not a knife you flick open. I don´t do it anyway. Thumstuds work with gloves on.
Used to be my daily carry for over two years. Still one of my favs.
Go get it.

No blade play on my Hornet. The blade looks cool and the seven small holes in the groove is a nice added touch.

The only MOD I have not had exceptional results with it the Tempest, for some reason I just can't get a good one (tried 3).

Other than that I've got 4 other MOD folders and love them.

The Hornet is my favorite small folder, big enough for most tasks and small enough for most people.

MOD service is great as well. I've only ever needed them for replacement clips, screws etc but I always get near immediate replys to e-mails and the times I have spoke to them on the phone they are very friendly.

A price of $125 from a dealer is the best price I've ever seen on any of MOD's folders, I'd get it without question.

After that go for a CQD MKII, by far one of the coolest and most feature packed folders ever made.

I would go one step further than others and say in manual action knives MOD beats Microtech by a fairly strong margin.

The Hornet appealed to me the most of MOD knives because of its reasonable for daily carry size and seemingly secure and comfortable handle. When I finally got my hands onto this one I was heavily disappointed – the handle doesn’t work for me at all.
No complaints about fit and finish on the one I have dealt with (it was auto version).
I’m not partial to aluminum handles on heavy-duty knives considering them somewhat too slippery and easily getting scratched. G-10 handles work for me better in this group of knives.

However the handling comfort is pretty individual matter...

$125, hmm... Wouldn’t BENCHMADE 730 Ares be better buy at the same or even lower price?
Or SPYDERCO Lil’ Temperance with its way, way more comfortable and secure handle if you are looking for shorter blades...

Sorry, can't agree with you here.

If you are talking straight dollar for dollar when you say "better buy" the MOD is a much better buy. You can hardly find the MOD for under $150 but you can buy the Benchmade or Spyderco all day long for around $120 or less. The MOD is the better buy.

If knives were bought strictly based on being the better buy there would be no need to spend more than $100 or $150 on one really. I can get the same materials in a $125 Benchmade that I can in a $550 Bob Lum custom, which is the better buy?

From there on out everything else would be personal preference because they are all made of premium materials and all 3 have different locks.

Having handled/owned the other knives mentioned the MOD Hornet is more comfortable for me, and I have big hands, this is where the handling comes in to play.

From an appearance only standpoint, the MOD is by far the nicest looking IMO.

Yeah $125 is a very good price. I don't like the handle at all on that knife.., but if it works for you.., it's a darn good knife.., and MOD does do quick warranty work if you have problems.
