First off, I've been lurking for awhile, I don't have alot of time to post and have not upgraded to download pics, so I apologize for the lack of porn, I am currently deployed, and carry with me a muddy AD on my belt in an Okuden sheath, a dumpster mutt goes on my gear, again in an Okuden sheath, the other Busse family knives I own are: FBMLE, satin battle rat, black anf tan battle rat, assault shaker, ratwieler, LEBAT, desert jack rounds it all out.
My question is this, has anyone modified the FBMLE by thinning out the blade and taking some off the handle to reduce weight to make it more conducive to carry? If so do you have pics?
Has anyone had the res-c handle taken of a swamp rat and replaced with micarta? If so who did you have do it? And do you have pics?

Last, I wanted to thank the crew of the busse family of knives, the first knife i bought was a howling rat when the store sold them, that was before my first deployment to Iraq, I have since given that one to a good friend of mine. The customer service you offer is top notch, and your knives are AWESOME, every single Marine I show these knives to is impressed.

Ban! Oh, Ban??? Where are you ...

Question for you ...

Don't worry, he'll show up eventually.

And if he can't 'make it happen,' let me tell you about a fine fellow we like to call 'Grinducci'.... :D

I don't recall anyone modding a FBM LE like that; if you want a lighter carry, it seems to me you would start with a lighter knife. Member Ban has done some beautiful reginds, he has thinned down a GB FBM, but I don't know if he did anything to the handle stock.

You can post pics w/o upgrading your membership by hosting them on Photobucket. Instructions here:

Hehe.... Online now! Thanks for the links Resinguy

Like Resinguy says.... If you want a lighter knife with smaller handles then you should start with a lighter version of the FBM know as CGFBM. That is basically what I did when I did the FABM and wanted something that was large yet still packable in the field. My FABM is a tad over half the weight of a FBMLE yet still be able to compete with all the big boys in chopping.

Thinning down a FBMLE is definately doable but why mess with a perfectly beautiful knife.

Another option is to get a FFBM with standard handles (FBMLE=Mag Handles) then do a full flat grind on it. What you end up with is basically a tad thinner version of a FMBLE at .290 vs .320. That is precisely what I am currently doing.

The Respirene-C handles can be removed and replace with a hidden tang/mortised tang handle in G10, Micarta, Wood, etc....

OP's right, I'm sure Grinducci would be happy to take some of the weight off of your FBMLE. It might look more like a Badger when you get it back- but it'll be a great deal lighter! :D

Here's an FBMLE I sent in to Grinducci for a slight modification. :D

Best. Photochop. Ever. He's never going to live mangling that warden down, is he?

I'm sure I won't! I guess I will have to redeem myself when I'm done moving and get my shop setup again. Modifying a FFBM will be one of my first jobs.
