I have an Emerson La Griffe and a Mod Scorpion.
Just got my black serrated Scorpion from Architect (thanks again left feedback in GB&U). Here are my impressions:
1. The knife has a nice polished bevel, (on both the upward swept main edge, and sharpened swedge)but I wish the edge had a more of an aggressive/toothy edge to bite a little better.
2. Yah the serrations are a good idea for the small swedge area because it gives you both cutting edges because it gives you a choice of edges. Its now like regular combo edges because the plain edge and serrations aren't on thes same side of the knife. The sharpened swedge isn't very effective because its still thick and its hard to thin out the sharpened edge of a swedge. But thats not to say is isn't effective.
When held in the Hawkbill configuration the tip is the most important part of the blade because its the part that penetrates. Once your in, most of the work is done

The knife arrived on Saturday, its Sunday now, and Ive already cut myself. I can honestly say the tip is very sharp
3. Yah a lot of people dont like serrations because its a pain to sharpen, but this knife is designed to be a defensive/hold out neck knife, not your hard use lets cut down a small tree EDC, so you shouldn't be sharpening this knife too much anyways.
4. I have small hands and this things feels a little on the small side to me.
I read it in another post, and I agree, the most comfortable way to hold the blade is with your thumb on the MOD logo. When you pick one up you'll know what I mean.
5. In comparision to the La Griffe I own: IF YOU COULD BUY 1 AND ONLY 1: either the Emerson La Griffe or the Mod Scorpion strictly as a defensive backup blade I say the Emerson La Griffe, just because these knives are designed to be just that, a knife you rarely pull out and as a last ditch weapon, not to cut rope or open envelopes (dont get me wrong you could, and I have, its just not designed for that) ever tried to sharpen a La Griffe and you'll know what Im talking about.
NOW IF YOU CAN BUY 2: get both, the Scorpion lends itself to be more of a utility blade with both edges sharpened. The main blade could be used for most of the cutting chores, and the hawkbill blade could be used for other types of cutting

The black TiCN is leaps and bounds better than Emerson's black powder coating on the La Griffe. I noticed the coating on my La Griffe rubbing on the first day. The sheath on the Scorpion is asthetically pleasing and the fact they include a Blade Tech, Teklok is cool. I think the sheath is made of injection molded kydex not a do-it-yourself'er job. Also a minor point, I think the black break-a-apart ballchain that comes with the Scorpion has a more wear resistant finish than the La Griffe one.
NOW IF YOU CAN BUY 3: buy me the plain edge one, so I'll have one of each
CONCLUSION: They both have the strong and weak points, which is why if your into defensive neck knives I say get both. (If you want a La Griffe I know a dealer w/good prices). If you could only buy one, could I recommend the Scorpion? Of course, just be aware of what your buying. Just my 2 cents, hope it helped.
BTW I think right now, PVKNIFE.com is having a special on the Mod Scorpions, never dealt with them before however.
