MOD Tridend = my answer to small sebenza

Since there have been many posts saying things like "Is this knife as good as the Sebenza?" I just wanted to put in my two cents that the MOD Trident is every bit the knife that a small Sebenza is, and much less expensive. I have a large Sebenza, and an MOD trident. I have yet to find a less expensive large knife as solid as the large Sebenza, but the MOD trident definately does it for me; and it has better ergonomics. Just my $.02 YMMV.

I've owned both knives over the last couple of years, and I liked them both for different reasons. Both had their advantages and disadvantages.

The thin hollow-ground BG-42 blade of the small Sebenza would far out-cut the Trident on the things that I use a knife for. It was much slimmer and lighter as I recall. The lockup was better. The materials of construction were also much better than the Trident. It was also much more expensive, and had one flaw that prevented me from keeping it - the small thumb stud, combined with the tip-up carry configuration, would catch on my pants pocket and open as I was drawing the knife out. Totally unacceptable.

The Trident had a much better handle shape and size, making it much more comfortable than the Sebenza. But the MUCH thicker blade meant that it didn't come close to the Sebenza when cutting. The pocket clip was mounted far too low, meaning way too much of the knife stuck out of my pocket. The liner lock also failed the spine whack test easily, as did many other Tridents I've seen. Again, totally unacceptable.

In the end, I no longer own either knife.

Wow. The Trident failed the spine whack?!?! I have a Ladyhawk with a lockup tighter than a bank vault. It won't close unless I let it!
Sorry about the Trident though. I'm shocked to hear that.

I finally got to handle the whole MOD line the other day. I was completely blown away. You see these knives on the web and in magazines and you really can't get a feel for how good they are.

We are looking at picking up MOD soon and Jim Ray came in to show the line to us. I was floored. The Trident was one of my favorites of the bunch. Light, compact, great action I may have to buy one (hate to switch from my Spydie though).

Senator,

I am surprised that you had an MOD that failed the spine whack. Is that the only one you have owned or is this something to look for?

I have a Trident and it is really top rate. However, I would not put it in the class of my large Sebenza. I have not handled a small Sebie, so I can't comment.

Have the Tempest, also, and it is likewise a quality piece.
