I just recieved my MOD Trident, plain blade, bead blast finish, and it's a truly impressive piece of work.

This is the 2nd Trident I have owned. The first was about 1.5 years ago, and while the fit & finish were first rate, the lockup was a bit wobbly and the liner lock would not hold up.

My how things have changed. This time the fit & finish are still first rate, if a bit "crude" (more on that in a bit), but the lockup is rock solid.
As much as I think the spine whack is pointless, I still find myself doing it, and am happy to report that repeated whacks on the spine of the Trident did not manage to disengage the lock. I whacked from the base to the tip, using "moderate" force, for a total of about 20 whacks.

Now, the fit & finish. "crude" or "rugged" are the words that spring to mind, as compared to the fit & finish on Microtech knives, which are somewhat comparable to MOD.
By crude I mean to say they are not as finely worked...the spacing is a bit wider, and more noticeable, if you catch my meaning.
If you have handled a Microtech, you know that the traction notches on the blade spine are unobtrusive and finely worked, whereas traction notches on the MOD are more utilitarian.
This is not a bad thing at all, it's just different, and a matter of personal preference.

The only real "problem" with the Trident, and all of the knives from MOD, are the mini bios on the blade. They just scream "wannabe" and they really cheapen the knives, in my opinion.
Now, since the Trident is surely going to be a user for me, I will just polish off the mini bio, but it's still annoying.

All the specs and pics can be found on MOD's website, just click

I agree with you, the mini bios should have been left out. Besides from that, I love my MODs. I have 11 of them, and none had any lock problems and were rock solid.

I also have the Trident and am very happy with it. It's a real tough user. MOD does some very good work.

Its good to hear these good things about MOD as I have a Ladyhawk on the way and am anxious to experience it.

Started getting MODs late last year, the Trident is just as much a favorite as any of the others! Just wish it wasn't illegal to carry the autos,:(

Well, I polished off the mini bio with some ultra fine grit, and it looks great...the blade now has a nice shine to it, and no mini bio. Time invested, 15 minutes.

The best feature of the MOD line are the thumbstuds. They are perfectly shaped, nice and full, and best of all, they end up snugged up next to the scales so they don't get in the way whem the knife is onen.
There is just nothing worse than getting a nice folder with some nasty thumbstuds that stick out like a diamond in a goats ass...

Just got a MOD Trident in trade.

So far, I like it! Reminds me of a MicroTech, but it fits my hand a lot better.

Normally hate thumbstuds, but the clip forces the knife to ride high enough the "wrong" stud doesn't get in the way.

Mike,
What exactly did you use to polish off the mini bio? I just put up a MOD Hornet for auction on ebay, so I don't want to mess with it because it is new in the box. The reason I ask is because I have a Deiter CQD MarkII on the way. It will have the bead blasted, grey finish also, and I'll probably want to take it off. Is there any evidence that the bio was there, or that you polished it off? Thanks.
Also, why didn't you opt for the black finish blade? I didn't because I was worried that it would be ugly after some use. What do you think?

Mikemck,
They have made a lot of progress refining their knives in
a short amount of time.I have been pleased with everything I have
purchased:CDQ,Mk1,Hornet,Tempest and Trident.

Razor,

I *think* I was using 220 grit, which worked great. It polished the blade and removed the mini-bio fairly quickly, but not too quickly, if you know what I mean.
You can see that there was something there on the blade if you look very closely, but you do have to be looking for it.
You can also tell that the blade has been polished, but I just did a quick job of it, because I intend to use it pretty hard and am not worried about the looks. It would be easy really to polish it up nicely so that you could not tell it had come from the factory some other way though..it would just take a bit more time, and you would have to take the knife apart to get a uniform polish.

It's much easier than most would think, and it's also fun to "customize" your knife so that you have a truly unique knife that you personally did the work on.

I got the Trident in a trade, but I have also had one of the black bladed models, and it was very nice, except for the mini bio :)

Well guys;
I frequented SMKW in Tenn not long ago and back there in the rear of the store near the CRKT's was a selection of MOD. Worlds finest wannabe flea-market "wish I was a United" was the first impression I got. Just from looks of course. U can count on the fact that anytime somebody prints "we're #1" all over the place---look out.

I noticed they spent alot o' time on the pretty box and the handle;alot of garbage just begging to be grinded off a blade. Noticed they are made not far from here in NC. And then I looked at the price....I took a few steps back; looked for BO RANDALL under the counter; didn't see him; and picked up the wonder blades. Loose fit. loose lockup.Pretty handle though. Dull as....Well I wont go there...

Handles felt alot like accessories for the handicapped. I should know.; Please understand I dont mind laying serious $$$$ on the table for cutlery and am an aspiring maker myself; but....

FOR GODSSAKE...if youre gonna charge what randall knives wants for a blade...BE AS GOOD AS THEY ARE:mad:

Yeah, Well I just got the full size MOD Dieter CQD Mk1 and it was perfect in every way. It uses the plunge lock with an additional lockout device on top of that, so spine wacks are pointless. Nothing moves this blade. Fit and finish are flawless and its sharp enough out of the box to do surgery with. Rear auxiliary blade is novel, but works and the carbide glass breaker seems to work well. Love the side hilts and grippy surfaces on the knife. Your hand is not slipping forward on this knife. Its my first MOD, and I now intend to buy the smaller CQD Mk11 to go with it. If MOD was crappy and overpriced before, its sure not with this knife. I would not touch a microtech of any persuasion as a hard use folder over this particular model. Which brings me to my last point. The Dieter CQD series is the only knife they make that I like. Its also the only factory folder I am aware of of using the plunge lock, which gives me more confidence than any other locking system I have tried. So maybe they are coming along finally.
