Hey all new guy here... found this site after I just ordered a Halo II and was searching around reading on other OTF's. Wondering what the thoughts are on MOD vs. Microtech as far as build quality, edge holding, etc. I'd gather it's personal preference but thought I'd ask the pros and get some feedback.

My new Halo will replace a Colt M-16-K that for any that don't know is a folder with a hidden button in the grip that makes it a auto, it can be used as auto or manual but is getting pretty worn. I also have a MOD Mark I which I seldom use bacause of the bulky size. I was going back and forth between the Halo II, Ultratech II, and MOD Triton OTF.

Microtech. In my opinion, MODs are overpriced, and I heavily dislike their designs.

I like MOD. I have a CQD, CQD Mark II, and an auto CQD Mark I. If the big one is too much, try a Mark II. These knives are extremely sharp and durable.

Microtech are OK, also. My MT SOCOM Elite sits in its box. I just prefer the MODs that I have.

Ive had 2 MODs and I own several MTs. I got rid of both MODS. Ive kept every MT I ever bought. Take from that what you will.

MOD over MT. MT in a way copied Dieters design with the breaker and belt cutter. MT is still good...but I think they are a bit overpriced...

Seems evenly split so far... I'm hoping the Halo will not be too large for regular daily use/carry. As a second slightly smaller option I was considering the Ultratech II with the one side plain and other serated and the MOD Triton. Anyone care to comment on these two?

From what I've heard the Tritons were are huge disappointment. They took forever to come out and when they did people were not impressed with the quality. Maybe the custom version set the bar too high, but you just don't hear much about them anymore at all.

A Halo is a tough call for EDC carry. It needs to have a sheath due to the no-safety castration issue, and it doesn't have a clip. It's also much longer than the typical pocketknife, and the sound of it opening is much louder and more aggresive sounding and looking than a double action OTF, plus there's not convenient way of closing it (requires two hands).

If you're worried that the ultratech is too small (it's not for me) then you could always go up to a Scarab or a benchmade infidel (if you can find one yet).

the MOD triton is second rate imho compared to MT makora/scarab and halo, i would much prefer the halo to any MOD auto, MOD isnt a bad knife but the OTF they make is funky imho, IIRC they are a little cheaper than MT, but still, i'll take a MT OTF over any other factory made OTF, anyday, anytime.

hey, aint ya jack bauer, i thought ya already had a halo lol???

Microtechs are THE OTF. Marfione may not have the best customer ervice but his products are top notch. If the halo turns out to be to big, you might want to try and find a Dalton otf. Dalton is another great company. Their products are a bit rougher and less finished but rugged as all get out. However i cant imagine anyone not likeing a HALO. Best of luck and welcome aboard.

Both are top grade manufacturers. Price on my opinion reflects their manufacturing process which is IMHO more complicated then common known producers.

3D miled handles for example for MOD Mark I and II and same for Microtech Mini SOCOM Elite and Amfibian. More complicated locking mechanism etc. And better attention to details overall.

Similar knives by other usually cost higher, but in general everybody else doing less complicated design.

Microtech on my opiniom has best Edge in the industry - it is very thin and nobody else offers such thin edge. This is why I use SOCOM to cut out splinters etc - thin edge and thin tip make it possible to do it on the skin level without blood coming out.

Both company has great models but also models which I do not like.

Thanks, Vassili.

MT For OTF, MOD for folders...they are both good companies...so its personal preferance on the style of the knife and the feel. Nuff Said...

I tried out a MOD Triton, a MT Makora and Scarab and one of the new Benchmade Infidels at the Blade show. Ergonomically the Triton and Infidel were both leaps and bounds ahead of the Microtechs the actions seemed to be smoother as well. The price on the Triton is also very attractive when compared to the Microtechs.

Yeah, the Chinese took it from me at the end of Season 5 :D

Thanks for all the info everyone! I'm anxiously awaiting my Halo and from the sound of it the only thing that could send it back for an exchange would be it's size... we'll see. Either way it sounds like I my want to pick up an Ultratech. After looking at the Triton I think the sandpaper like grip inlay would end up tearing up my jeans and I like the Ultratech II that offers one side plain and one side serrated.
