Recently retired my EDC and need a tactical folder to replace it, i've considered the Emerson CQC7A (with the wave:D ) and also the MOD Trident, however i've found that very little info is available on the MOD line of knives (have checked out their website and searched the forums) i was hoping some of you guys could shed some light on this. FYI the knife if for utility/self defense, and i appreciate any other suggestions any of you guys cares to make.

I traded for a MOD Hornet MA a few weeks ago.

Beautiful knife design, very compact and easy to carry. I like the kraton inlay and unlike some other, the grip suits me fine.

OTOH, this has a thick blade steel and an unusually "rounded" grind near the edge. I don't know quite how to describe it. Even well sharpened, I find it marginal for utility work.

I have kept either a Benchmade 940 for weekend carry (thin blade, good for cutting food) and a Benchmade 450 for EDC at work.

I just bought a Spyderco Native with G-10 handle, with the hope that it will be larger blade I have been looking for for everday backup.

Other choices are the Spydie Wegner (great all-around knife but rather plain looking).

Hello Matthew. I have a Trident. All MOD knives are well made, in similar construction to the early Microtech Socoms. The plain edge portion on my Trident was not shaving sharp, but it has a good working edge and the serrations take care of all the rest. What I don't like about the MOD Trident is basically a personal thing in that the knife is designed for tip down carry. I personally like tip up carry like on the Emersons. If your looking for fast deployment, go with the Emerson. The Wave feature works fast. :D I guess it's all a matter of what you are looking for in a folder.

M@THEW,
I have to echo the above comments - if you want something multipurpose and you don't mind the size (for some it is too large) I would recommend the Emmerson Commander. I also have a Trident, but I do not like it for my EDC for teh same reasons others have mentioned - I do not like tip-up carry and I prefer the Commander blade profile. I should note that the MOD line is very good quality and while I do not prefer to carry it, my wife loves her Ladyhawk. She likes the tip-up carry and the blade size is perfect for her. She also prefers the reverse grip "kerambit-style" of deployment and use. Go figure... Her other EDC is a simple Spyderco Delica with partial serrations - you can't beat simplicity.

I have a Trident auto for my edc and a cqd auto i have had a tempest and hornet all are great knives very well made the trident is just the right size the serations are about 3/4 up the blade makes for a good cutting knife you can,t go wrong with MOD

Thanks for the input, guys i'll be sure to post a review on whichever knife i go with :D

m@thew,

I would not overlook the MOD CQD MKII Stealth. IMHO it is the best of MOD's manual action knives.

Mine has superb fit and finish, perfect lock-up and they are one of the baddest looking folders out. Couple that with a great plunge lock and secondary lock and you have a hell of a knife.

The ergonomics on the handle are superb and you can tell the minute you pick it up that a lot of thought went into the design.

I have a plain edged black blade model and the black finish has held up beautifully to some pretty hard use.

I've sold/traded all of my other MOD's and Microtech's because I gave up on liner locks but the Trident I had was also excellent, I just like the CQD MKII better.

Don't mistake it for the full sized CQD, it is by no means an EDC because it is one of the largest folders going.

If you post a request in the WTB section I'm sure you could scrape on up for around $150, worth every penny of it too! It's easily one of my favorite knives.

:D :D

I wholeheartedly second cpirtle's remarks. The CQD Mark II is a real winner. It has some of the overall best ergonomics I have experienced. A real rugged user and small enough for EDC.
