Mod'd micarta?

Just curious if anyone has any pics of modded micarta scales?

I have been messing around with a 1x1 and reamer bits for my drill, my dremel, drill bits, anything I can find. I am trying to come up with either a patten or random conglomerate of shapes/dings/dents/cuts that will yield sufficient amount of grip while minimizing hot spots.

This is for my 4, so chopping and rubbing is a concern.

You could try sanding it with 80-grit?

IMO, the stock Becker Micarta is damn grippy without any mods.....not trying to be a smartass, but have you just put it on and used it for a bit? For the $$'s of the stuff, I'd give it a really long test period befor I did anything to it. I've got it on my 12, 9 and a tweener and IMO it rocks stock.

I was planning on taping off/drawing faintly with pencil to sand, shape and keep stock.
Sanding the back strap area for pull cutting, pulling down the top of the front shoulders a bit for a bit of clearance while on a back swing when chopping and the scales right side on the heel where it contacts my Palm due to it creating a hot spot also when chopping.

If I do anything, I will mock up a set in wood and rough that out and get an idea as to how it will feel in hand prior to taking my micarta to the grinders/files.

I generally will go with 100-120 to pull off any polish/high grit work, then to 80 for general usage and 40-60 grits for my knives that see a water prominent environment. Sometimes I will use 40-60 to touch up key contact spots if the knife is a small, 3 finger fixed blade for a more textured feel (inside a finger choil, top of the spine near the ricasso, for under the first knuckle)


GSoM: I have used micarta before and while I know what these feel like stock, I also know I generally prefer sanded micarta. That being said, you Do have impeccable taste, so I will give them a fair shake in their current form.

I've touched mine up here and there with a little rat tail file.
Mostly just to make everything flush on the tang.
I haven't ever taken a serious amount off. I'm kinda scared to. Once it's gone it can't go back on...

If you do end up modding it, make sure to let us know how it goes.
