Not sure you hardcore hog will like this!

Heres a pic of how it use to be.

Before it arrived i had decided to get rid of the crinkle coating so into the blast cabinet it went and my gosh that stuff is tough plus it was hiding a very nasty pitted finish underneath so then comes the idea of rip the scales off and grind and nice 400 grit finish & that worked out great. I got a little carried away while grinding and re-ground the bevels then added the false edge, modded the tang a lot  and finally hollowing out the tang to louse a little wight.

Just got the green canvas scales bolted and glued to be finish it off tomorrow, I'm thinking it should have a kydex sheath and might end up going to to a friend who's just passed final selection for the Royal Air Force.

Very nice work. But how dare you start this thread and not have finished photos yet?  :D

Looking good, can't wait for pics of the finished project !

That "very nasty pitted finish" is referred to as INFI bumps.

Kinda a badge of honor, after you've wore / removed the coating. But it's not for everyone, many do as you describe and sand the finish smooth.

Jerry's floated the idea of selling knives with that finish, "competition blade finish"

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=504711&highlight=competition

that might make an interesting poll, 'what's your opinion of INFI bumps ?"

Nice grinds Barker. :)

I have been wondering if sandblasting would be enough to remove "INFI dimples"...but... I'm guessing not.

Look forward to seeing the finished knife.

Cheers.

How many thou did you have to take off (per side) in order to clear the INFI dimples?

Very cool. I always thought that blade would be great with very thin or no scales at all
Thanks for sharing

Talon Hole??? Where'd the Talon Hole go??? OMG:eek: you ground off the Talon Hole??? Quick, take down these pictures before Jerry sees it!

;):p

Having some holiday fun with an user eh? Nice job man, looks as if it kept you very busy. Here's a tip, next time when you want to remove the coating...strip it with some form of paint removal chemical. Most hardware stores sell it. Jasco, is the stuff I use. Can't wait to see the finish product.

Soupy; Blasting wont remove them, i was using 80 grit medium and its was taking at least a couple of minutes of direct blasting just to take off the crinkle coat and thats using 10 pressure, some of the dimples are quite deep and i ended up taking about 0.5mm off each side when i ground them out.

Thanks for the comments guys, i should have some more pics for you either tomorrow or sunday.

Looks Great! I like the idea of hollowing out the handles to lose weight. That is another option to the tapered tang. Look forward to the finished product.

Just got this finished. So now its new specs are,

Blade: INFI steel, 70mm cutting edge & false top edge.
Overall length of 190mm and tang thickness of 4.5mm
Handle: Textured green canvas micarta with loveless bolts.

The whole thing has been shot blast with glass beads for the satin finish.
