So you guys probably saw my cord wrap pics. Well it was cool but I wanted to try a different mod. I like the Izula style handle scales and felt it would be an easy mod to make. I took my hack saw and cut the front of the scales off. I used some nuts, washers and bolts to keep them tight together. In the photo you can see I put a 2 x 4 under the scales so my clamp would hold them. After I cut the front off I used my 1x30 belt sander to get the shape where I wanted. I also softened the little horn. On a side note sanding micarta on a fast belt smells like someone putting out burning fabric by pissing on it. YUK. Then I used 400 grit sandpaper to blend the finish. The 80 belt at high speed leaves a very smooth nearly polished finish. The 400 grit did a nice job blending it back together. A quick wash in some dish soap and quick dry and they looked like I bought them! Then I had to cut the cord wrap off, which kind of pissed me off because it took forever to do! Either way I am extremely happy with the finished product and when the N2 is available again I will get another and do the same thing to it.

Enjoy the pics.

I will be making my own sheath for it next. Probably kydex, but I was thinking a leather one would be sweet.

I wish I had one to know why you did that. Does it give your index finger better control?

You are on a roll lately with the mods. I really like the look, I'd probably have to hold both to decide which I preferred. Keep us posted on any sheath making!

Impressive work! It looks great, but what do you like about the feel?

Mods are not nearly as common here as in other knife brand circles. You're a pioneer!

Riz, I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but watch out for the dust off that micarta man, it's some nasty stuff. The mod looks great BTW.

I wore a dust mask. Thanks for the heads up.

As for ergos. I did this for the look and because i had an extra set of scales. Guy designed his handle scales that way for a reason. They are more fit to your hand before I modded it. Its not uncomfortable, it just has a different feel. If I could do it again, (and I will) i would probably leave about 1/8 inch of the index finger elongation on the scale. I cant explain how the difference feels. You just have to feel it! After some use I will know better and will be able to articulate it. I would not be surprised to find out that Guy tried scales similar to mine and elongated them for more comfort in prolonged use. The few little cut tests I did seemed to suggest it has no effect on quick draw, cut, resheath type uses.

Yes sir!!! On small knives, I prefer the pinch hold most of the time so this really works for me. Now if you could extend the jimping towards the handle (same style of course so it looks factory), make a kydex sheath that doesn't extend out for the scales and offered all 3 mods at a decent cost. Mmm, just sayin........

I think the fact that the scales went all the way into the sheath bothered me. I also like a pinch grip. And I didnt say it at first, but this necker is going on a tac vest as a weapon/tool and I wanted it to be thinner because I want the sheath and more handle concealed behind mag pouches. I will also say, I like the reverse grip better with the smaller scales. Reverse grip, non weapon weapon hand.

Yep. I defnitely prefer the original scales or my modded ones over the wrap. I like cord wrapped handles to be flat with no real knotty feel to it. Knives that are designed to be wrapped work well because the cutouts in the handles are intended to allow the wrapping. Obviously the necker can be wrapped but it took me 3 tries to figure out a way to wrap it "smooth". My modded scales is sort of a middle ground between the wrap and full scale. Not to make this about another company, but an example of a perfect cord wrapped handle neck knife is the White River knives backpacker.

I did the cordwrapping on this one and the sheath is a RizCorp product.

And if you were curious... White River was, and may still be the contracted manufacturer that made or makes Survive! Knives. Survive! Knives original prototypes were made by Bark River Knives. If you ever find a 5.1 that looks like the current 5.1, but has fixed scales and a full convex grind, its a barkie. I believe that Guy wasnt happy with some of the QC from Bark River and switched to White River Knives. Any of the S!Ks with a very shiny stonewash are white river blades. I do not know who is making them now. It could still be WRK.

I knew about the BRKTs, I did NOT know about the WRK connection! Thank you for that information
