Ever get tired of those shiny plastic scales on your SAK? I messed mine up and decided to make some new scales for my tinker. I had some cedar wood on hand and after a couple hours of work here is what I have, not perfect since it's my first try at something like this, but it sure feels nice in your hand and gives you a bigger grip in your hands. I am thinking about putting some kind of a shield in it but havn't decided yet....any ideas? comments?

Funny thing is that V'nox made one very similar to that, wood and all.

Looks nice though.

Search is not working for me right now, but there's been some nice threads on the subject of custom scales for SAKs, try it and look around, I´ve made some in wood and in epoxy putty myself, others have used micarta, stag, etc. I feel the plastic scales are the weak point of SAKS, custom scales are a good improvement.

Looks good. Try some sandpaper and some oil or wax, it'll smooth it out and bring out the grain.

there is another knife forum, and it had directions for making a shield. oupa's shop forum or something.

I tried searching for a thread that Don Luis was talking about. Couldn't find it though...

On that thread, I posted a pic of a vic rehandle that I had done. Same thing, the handles were messed up. I had some dymondwood, so here is the result of my first rehandle. (BTW, haven't got up the courage to try it again yet.) I tried to inset the fleur-de-lis, but kinda messed that up too.

Nice job on your first try, though. Keep at it.

Glenn
