Modded my Tenacious...

Got bored tonight and decided to mod my Tenacious a little. Everything went smoothly except for a pretty nice cut on the last knuckle of my right middle finger. I pulled the genius move of tightening the pivot with the blade open. :o

I thought it would need a stitch or two at first, but the knife had a pretty good edge on it and the cut had already closed up well by the time I got back to the house.

Also, the blade was way off-center when I got everything put back together so I over-tightened it hoping I could back it off and things would straighten up. Unfortunately, I may have stripped the pivot screw. It doesn't look like it, but I can't get the hex key to bite right.

What is it with people cutting themselves with a Tenacious? Both nutnfancy AND cutlerylover. That knife really likes to bite.

I think it has more to do with the ZERO blade retention, at least mine has none.

Sweet job though on that mod. Almost makes me want to copy :D

i did something different, leaving the g10 scales alone, heres what i did to shave some weight off my Tenacious. works great thinking i might replace the scales with some micarta at some point.

I have no complaints on the retention on my model. The blade centering on the other hand...

The mod was really simple to do. This is my first time modifying any of my knives. All I did was take the knife apart and bolt the scales and liners back together.

Then, I matched the holes in the liners with the proper size drill bit and used the holes to guide the bit through the G10 in the same spot. I flipped the scales back over and chamfered the edges with a bigger drill bit.

Took an old piece of sandpaper around the end of my finger and lightly sanded each hole. Washed everything off and reassembled.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys. I fully expected someone to say, "Way to ruin a Tenacious...".

I'd send that back in for warranty repair, tell them; the blade mechanism seems stiff and after cleaning the blade is no longer centered with the case.

Way to ruin a Tenacious. Pathetic. Some guys just can't leave a good thing alone.

So, where do I send mine for some pimpin'? :p :D

Great mod, and your work looks pretty nice. If I had to pick a favorite Spyderco model right now, it would be the Tenacious family. Just too many cool options and mods possible.

Some of those bigger holes look big enough to fit a pinky into. Be careful that you don't close that baby on yourself.

That said, it certainly looks edgy(no pun intended). Any noticable difference in weight?

Though the blade centering issue definitely existed before this disassembly, I doubt they'll be interested in any warranty work after this mod.

I did email them to see about getting some extra screws tonight so I can try and fix this problem myself.

I also strongly considered turning some delrin or graphite impregnated bronze bushings tonight to replace the paper thin stacks of brass and phosphor bronze ones.

They probably are big enough to fit a pinky in, but I'm a righty so the big holes are on my palm side when closing.

The G10 scales are very light in original form. Any weight loss is minimal. The smallest hole on the non-lock side does provide a great place to stick your thumb for extra traction.

See if they'll fix the holes, too. "I was just opening and closing the knife when..." :p
