Modding a Becker knife void the warranty?

I'm curious how much you can mod a Becker before jeopardizing your warranty.

I feel like a minor mod like stripping would not matter but what about some more serious mods?

The one in particular that has me wondering is the Haze BK9 mod.

Also wondering about thumb ramp removal or adding jimping to a spine or even clichs awesome snakeskin etching/patina?

I recommend calling Ka-Bar and asking, but I'm a major newb to good knives, so I don't have a definite answer.

My gut says that the stripping shouldn't void the warranty because that'll happen with normal wear & tear, but I'm 90% sure that etching it or removing the thumb ramp will void any and all warranties.

As a standard rule of thumb anything more than sharpening a knife will void the warranty. Some companies may or may not give you more to play with than that.

Something like stripping the knife IMO would be a warranty voider, yes it happens naturally but that is called natural wear through use. That is not the same as doing it ones self on purpose. Removing material from anywhere other than the edge would also be a sure way to kick your warranty to the kerb. There are better people here than me to tell you what BK&T's position is on that though.

Warranty? You don't need no stinking warranty! You're gonna beat it like a cockroach running across your kitchen anyway. You are talking about Becker knives right?

What arcadia said! The only way your going to break a Becker is through abuse, voiding the warranty anyway. Mod away, you will have a blast.

you mean you took it out of the box? aiyeee yahhhhh :)

I have a whole drawer full of Beckers with no warranty. ;)

There's warranty for the rabble, and then there's warranty for Beckerheads. KA-BAR, for instance, replaced a Heavy Bowie that I broke in a vise on purpose on video... Loyal customers are clearly given the royal treatment.

However, for rank-n-file knife buyers I think it'd be real interesting to know what the actual answer is. I'm guessing it'd be reasonable to assume that grinder+knife=no warranty. Sharpen a swedge with stones? Maybe not so much.

I imagine there is very little that they wouldn't cover in paticular if you are a beckerhead. Ka-bar isn't like some of the other companies who won't honor a warranty if you do more than open letters with a knife I am resisting naming names). I think short of breaking it on purpose you will be good.

Maybe Tooj will pop in here.

I think it doens'y really matter though as the chnace of you breaking it is pretty damn slim.

I have beat my BK2 like it was my wanker back in high school and it is no worse for wear

I get the feeling that Kabar will honor the warranty outside the letter of the law as they see fit, and on a case by case basis. I.e. if it wasn't abuse and if the mods didn't contribute to the defect.

From what I've seen Kabar is very fair with their warranty. I believe they are more concerned with identifying and analyzing potential defects than they are nickel and diming every warranty claim.

Heck, the customer service displayed throughout the forums has certainly led to more sales than what they've taken back on warranty.

If one of us Beckerheads had a problem and sent in the blade including our Beckerhead number and info would we get VIP treatment? :D

If so I have 3 with no warranty..and ya know what? That dont worry me none atall!

Well said Thrill to the Billy. From what I know you can mod a Becker and let Chuck Norris round house kick the hell out of it...it still aint brakin!!
