Hey guys, I was curious if this ever caught on, I think it might be fun to
mess around with one of them. I know it sure did with their hawks.

So, the question is, has anyone done anything special to their shovels,
besides the obvious sharpening, to make them stand out in any way?

Thanks in advance, PDE.

IIRC someone posted about having a synthetic handle made. But thats all I can think of.

Yea, I was reading over that the other day and it got me thinking.

Oh, well. Maybe I will have to change that.

Thanks so much.

I think that was me. I'm still debating on whether or not to produce the handles. I just don't know how well they would sell.

I really think those shovels are a fail without a saw edge. Maybe someone could chisel a saw edge on one side?

curious as to why? (synthetic handle). The stock wood handle is very strong. A little sanding with 800 grit sandpaper, followed by a sock in turpentine and linseed oil for several days, then a steel wooling with 0000 steel wool and wax and your good to go.

Yes, but is that as cool as a synthetic handle?:D

Or as light?

Why not mod the spade to accept a riveted on, shortened saw blade?

Buy a cheap pruning saw for the blade, or buy a replacement blade for a Gerber, Laplander, Silky etc.

Good idea. Me really like much. I'd go for a Corona blade though.

Hmmm, maybe this should be the official special forces shovel modding
thread? So far we've got, synthetic handles, saw blades, maybe strip the
black paint, and reprofiling the edges.

What else?

Maybe a synthetic hollow handle with a survival kit in it?

I like the basic design a lot and think it has some potential to grow. If it wasn't good CS wouldn't have "borrowed" it from the Russians:D And the Russians wouldn't have put it out there unless it worked.

I still keeps mine untouch for the moment.. i thought at some point having started with tomahawks that i could do the same and just carry the shovel head and make a longer handle in the woods.

I would sharpen a side to work as a hatchet if only i could find myself a sheath for it... kinda weak that it didn't come with it (same as my 2 tomahawks)

Creative, but the problem with that is the handle is wedging on from the wrong direction. The head will slide up as soon as you try to push it into the ground.

yup.. without carrying a tool to fix the 2 screws on the new handle i don't see how its gonna happen without serious modding. so far, im happy with the short wooden handle.

Carry a SAK or multitool with you. . .

The real mod the CS shovel needs is to have the sheath with real MOLLE attachments, so it's easy to lash to a pack.

Why not get a cold steel brooklyn smasher & use that as a handle. It will look like the baseball bat & the shovel mated & made a kid ! LOL :D

I painted tiger stripes on my sheath, sanded and stained the handle to a beautiful cherry color, and wrapped ACU paracord around the metal handle portion of the blade

Weld nuts over the holes to create threads and then use thumbscrews.
