Modding Gerber LMF 2 sheath with Large Tek-Lok

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anybody has tried "simplifying/modding" the standard Gerber LMF 2 sheath by removing the core/solid Zytel part from all the black nylon fabric and webbing, and just attaching a Size Large Tek-Lok (to clamp it to a thick nylon gunbelt) to the basic Zytel structure.

The standard/original sheath seems well-made and solid, but seems a bit floppy on the belt and I much prefer the solidly-clamped high-rise carry.

It seems that it would work ... but it would be crucial for the available holes to line-up perfectly.

Thanks!

I think you should place this thread in the "General Knife Discussion" - The Gerber LMF 2 seems to be a modern knife and has nothing to do with a tradtional knife in general.

I've just managed to answer my own question. There are four relevant holes on a Tek-Lok. Imagine a rectangle standing vertical on its short side. And the distance between the two top (left and right) holes is 1.5 inches. The Zytel sheath-core has a similar vertically-aligned rectangle of four holes, but the distance between the top two holes is two inches. Oh well.

Coincidentally, the distances between the top and bottom holes is identical in both cases.

So I guess I've got two options. For the short-term I can take the sheath to a buddy who's a part-time leather-worker and have him simply stitch across (to reduce the size) the oversized (floppy) belt loop so it's a nice super-snug fit on my black nylon double-layer Uncle Mike's gun belt. (I won't bother to cut-off the excess 1.5" at the top, so the process could be reversed at a later date for whatever reason.

For the long term, I could ask around and maybe locate a Kydex craftsman to custom-make a "bikini" connector. But that involves some cost ... maybe even shipping ... plus there's also the cost and shipping for the Tek-Lok itself. And by then ... with three thick components ... the thing is getting kinda fat/bulky.

It's too bad that Canada's very own On Scene Tactical (an incredible Kydex operation) appears to be "no more" ... Noel did a great job on my BK-2 and his now-inactive website (which is now just a real tease) also offers a sheath for the LMF 2.

BTW, during my research I discovered a great (raunchy) interpretation of the letters LMF ... not too hard to figure-out.

And, on a site dedicated mostly to proud members (both "active" and "former") of the USMC, I learned that the letters actually stand for Uncle Sam's Misguided Children. Gotta love it! :)
