I cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, be considered as a Randall collector. However I have had a love affair with the Randall Model 1 since I first saw one in Sid Latham's book as a 13 year old boy.

Several have come through my hands over the years but I recently purchased the two Grails I have been looking for.........Both are from the 70's-80's period when I preferred the look and feel of the knives.

To me these just look right. What a fixed blade military knife should look like.

I hope you like them as much as I do.........:)

Beautiful examples. Ya gotta love those grinds.

Those are some fine examples of perfection!!! Man the more I look at those SFG's:thumbup: I wish I had a few.

Model 1 RMK's are my favorites as well.
Two gorgeous pieces !!
Congrats on both your Grails, Steven !

Thanks for the kind words lads.

I will continue to look for more 70's-early '80's era knives. I want to try and find a matching straight handle model 1.

Cheers

I took to the Model 14 at an early age much the same way you did Steven. I was out camping and some old dude was teaching us how to make fire without matches, on his left side he carried a #14 full tang with black micarta handle in a black leather sheath. He let me borrow it and that was all it took. The first knife I had to buy when I got set on my own was a #14 RMK.

That asside, I also enjoy the #1. I have found that the 8" variation of the #1 model is a bit too long for that grind, for my taste anyway. I pruchased a #1-6 of a fellow on this site, and I believe that the little 6" blade for the #1 really makes that grind look better. The 6" blade is plenty big enough for all the things that blades are good for too. I purchased a #1-8when I was just getting a feel for optioning RMK's with a bit of confidence, and I didn't like it so much.

Found this on Bladeforums.

This one is absolutely beautiful. Thank you again Peter.

This is the one that makes me think 8" is a bit too long for the #1's grind lines.

Shamelessly posting photos from my profile for a third or fourth time. Thanks gents.

I always find it amazing just how much our childhood's affect our tastes throughout our life.
I first saw the Model 1 in Sid Latham's book at the Buckhead branch of the Atlanta Public Library as a 13 year old boy. Until then the coolest knife I had ever seen was a Puma White Hunter (another knife I now own thanks to childhood longing)
It was another 7 years before I actually held my own one in my hand but I was hooked.

It also never ceases to amaze me just how ahead of the curve Bo Randall was. He offered knives in stainless and carbon, full tang and narrow tang, an excellent warranty and refurbishment service as well as many other industry standards that today we take for granted. Many a huge iconic knife brand has come and gone since Randall began making knives, but Randall's are still here, and long may they continue.

I am not much of a randall connoisseur but theyre growing on me. my dad has a few.

Not sure if this is a model 1, sorry for the bad pics.

the leather handled one was my grandpas and is O1 and the other one is my dads dive knife and its 440C stainless.

It does look a bit like a #5. And check out that choil, man they don't make them that small any more.

The middle one (Model 16) was my first Randall (Valentine's Day present from the now ex-wife), beautiful knives. I have a couple of the 18's, had a 17 (not anymore) along with others. I tend to like the model 19 (Bushmaster) most of all. Wonderful knives. I like the older Pumas also. But the Randalls - especially the model 16, is as they say nearly indestuctible.

Greetings and welcome to Bladeforums........If you like knives and particularly Randall's you are in the right place. Enjoy!:)
