Model 15

The model 15 was made for air crew survival, probably during the mid to late 60's for Viet Nam.

Sheldon will know this date for sure, from his research and book. But if I had to guess, I think it was 1972. Unlined lanyard holes ended that year, so I am guessing brass started right after that.

The one I'm looking at has a brass thong hole and a Jrb sheath that is black. He is telling me he bought it in 1973. Are the black sheaths common?

In 1973 yes, prior to that, not so much. Make sure it's a maker dyed sheath, not a user dyed sheath as that does make a difference. A maker dyed sheath will be black throughout; a user dyed sheath is typically done only on the outside surfaces. Hope that helps.
