ordered a model 18 direct from Randall in 2003 and is due soon.

specified stainless at time of deposit, but are having seconds thoughts about stainless VS carbon.

my intenions is to use this knife, not be a safe queen. skinning deer is probably real use for this knife.

my question is which should I get? Stainless or Carbon?
knurl or no knurl?

thanks,

I have the stainless now with knurled handle and I am trying to get a carbon for a user. I prefer the carbon for a user and I like the knurled handle better. For skinning deer I would get the knurled handle for a better grip, the smooth handle could get mighty slippery when covered with blood and fat. You could always cord wrap the smooth handle but then cleaning it after skinning would be a chore.

hmmmm...

carbon with knurling sure sounds practical for skinning deer.

so what's the drawback of stainless? hardness doesn't bother me. a few light licks with a diamond stone puts on a nice toothy edge. perfect for skinning :D

Did you get the 5.5" or the 7.5" and what made you choose one certain length over the other?

ordered 5.5 blade because that's the size I use.

longer blade does look prettier, but #18's blade is destined to be a user.

here's a pic of my current deer skinning knive: early Newt Livesay custom with A2 laminated blade, silver soldered guard, red fibre disc, ironwood, mexican peso and stag. lots of Scagel influence.
