I am looking at a hollow handle survival knife. I placed a couple of bids on EBAY for a Jack Crain Life Support System 1 but they exceeded the amount I was ready to pay. All I can see interesting now is the Model 18 and the Project 2. Any other ones that I am missing ? I know Chris Reeve is one piece but Randall's hollow handle isn't a problem so ...

I think I prefer the Model 18. I want stainless and I prefer the look of it. I don't think I am ready to pay 80-100$+ in order to avoid the waiting period (I earn CAN $ !!) so are there any dealers selling the Model 18 at a reasonable ''upcharge''.

Thanks

Fred

Hi Fred,

Couple of quick suggestions:

1. For Randall Made Knives you can call Randall dealers to see if they have the Model 18 configuration you want in stock. The Randall Knife Society (collector's club) is another resource you could query.

The dealers I know about are Nordic Knives and Cubeta's. I also believe that Greg Gutcher at Sullivan's Holster Shop (who make the leather sheaths for RMK) is also a Randall dealer.

2. You could post a query to the Randall Knife Society Forum here on BFC or the Randall forum on Knifeforums.com and I'm sure you'd get lots of info back, including who are the favorite dealers of the folks who frequent those forums.

The major complaint many have with hollow handled knives is that the tang is incredibly short and attached to the handle usually by means of a nut and bolt. I do not know if the Randall model 18 is attached that way as well, but the Project 2 eliminates that concern due to the fact that it is milled from one piece of metal.

If you must have a hollow handled knife, I reccommend wholeheartedly the Reeve. However, keep in mind that a small pouch attached to the sheath will hold many times what you can stuff in the handle. Don't limit yourself to hollow handled knives for survival use. If anything, I would put a bottle of oil in the handle for steel preservative use, or some sort of backup firestarting device.

I have a Project 1 and love it. Can't say enough good things about CRK, they are definately the sturdiest of hollow handle knives. That said, I have an 18 on order from Nordic, their current delivery is 4/04 and they are about $75 over RMK prices. I was just at the RMK shop last week and their wait is 42 months but a deposit guarantees today's price. It costs a premium to have one quick.

For a hollow handled survival knife it is very difficult to surpass the Chris Reeve P1 or P2 depending on your choice of blade shape. i have both and recommend them highly in a hollow handled knife.
