Pretty new to this forum and brand new to Randall knives. I'm looking for a camping/backpacking knife and am considering the model 18.

I'd appreciate any opinions on this model. I'm leaning toward the 5.5" blade instead of the 7.5" blade because it's less likely to jab me if I take a spill.

Did they make different handle finishes other than smooth? Which do you prefer and why?

Thanks in advance!
:)

I carried a 18 "crutchtip" in Vietnam....great knife...good balance and all that.....

The knife now comes with the "knurled" handle...meaning that the stainless steel is roughed up...(that's what I call it) so that one can get a better purchase or grip....the hollow handle is handy for storing "goodies" you might need such as matches, water purification tablets, advil, etc....

If I could only have one Randall it would be the 18...IMHO:)

Just ordered one myself with Knurled handle 5 1/2" blade......a long wait until delivered.."2005".. but well worth the wait.

B Etzler,
Have your ever held the knurled and the non-knurled version? What made you decide on the knurled?

If you order your Model 18 from a dealer, you could get you knife next year. I have a few RMK coming next year that I only ordered a few months ago.

Reply to HOSER....I ordered the "knurled" because I would have a better grip ( in case of moisture).

Kaitak....What can I say except "DUH!" Thanks, I call Randall and explain...now to find a dealer.....

I just looked at Nordic Knive web page and they are advertising July 2003 as the next available delivery date.
I am not saying that is the soonest you can get an knife, there might be other dealers with earlier delivery dates.
The Model 18 I have has knurled handle. Better grip in my opinion.

I wrapped my model 18 with a leather boot lace, great gripping power. I found the stainless steel to be hot from the sun in the summer or cold in the winter. Also, the leather has so many survival uses. After all that is what a # 18 is, a survival knife. All the best, Sam:)
