Looking for any information on a manufacturer or company for functional/decent quality US pattern m1840/60 Light Artillery Saber. It was based off of the French m1829 Artillery Saber. I know there are originals out there but I do not want to carry an original in the field.

Thanks!

Both list trooper and etched blade 1840 artillery swords. India made swords of usable quality but unsharpened. There are likely other ACW sutlers that carry the same product line. I had bought a saber from Blockade Runner several years ago and it has been satisfactory. I sharpened mine, while removing a good bit of thickness towards the point. The 1840 artillery seems like the least produced, so pickings are slim.

There is chevalierdauvergne.com of France, that produces some patterns in house but the 1829 is not a listed model. They might be one to approach for a higher end piece but then you would be approaching the cost of a very sound period sword. Similarly other custom makers.

I don't know who the weaponmaster was for the Texas Rising miniseries on the History Channel. Some of the swords look pretty good, others awful but no doubt they were sourcing from the same channels of production. The India stuff is ok but the grips a bit round/blocky with very glossy finishes overall.

BIGMICK45 on Ebay used to have some of the repros and may again some day. Maybe contact him.

I've been very pleased with the price to quality ratio of my Windlass sabers, including my 1840/60s. You might try looking at Kult of Athena for a wide variety of a number of brands at good prices.

Kult of Athena does not list the French 1829, nor the US 1840 artillery sword. KOA is liquidating the remaining Windlass items, so the Museum Replicas and Atlanta Cutlery bladed items will wane away there. Atlanta Cutlery does not offer the 1840 artillery saber. The two sutlers mentioned in my first post are supplied by much the same shops Windlass sources from. The huge eyesore I see on the Legendary Arms trooper offering is the god awful scabbard drag (that could be ground down).

Overall, I agree the Windlass stuff is ok for re-enactment and even sharpening. I later took a different route for cutting and found a sound period militia mounted artillery sword. It suits me for that purpose but an m1840 artillery saber it is not. I had originally bought the College Hill sword for that purpose (as well as drills of foot) but the difference is the treat of using a handy period sword. For impressionism/re-enactment, many groups suggest buying the least expensive, as most don't look horrible twenty yards away.

I am a bit jaded but my reproduction doesn't look too horribly out of place with my other sabres

Yeah I potray a federal, U.S. Regular artilleryman so really looking for that 1840 arty rather than heavy or light cavalry saber. I do have a current repro light artillery that I got from a fellow reenactor as a hand me down but looking to improve my quality without dragging an original through the mud so to speak. I've checked out a few sites and it does seem that there is an abdundance of the cavalry sabers still available in a range of quality of production...
